Henry Porn, who shot Deputy
Sheriff Drlscoll at Boise last Friday,
Inflicting severe wounds in the face,
Is not Insane, but was suffering from
exresMve use of medicine while
threatened with smallpox Dr. F. R.
Dome of Echo, accompanied by Dr.
W. G. Cole of this city, went over to
Boise Saturday to Investigate the
case and found that Dorn was en
tirely sane, but that he had prob
ably been In a delirious condition
whm he shot the deputy. In three
days proceeding the shooting of Drls
eoll at Boise Dorn had taken over
100 grains of quinine and large
quantities of whiskey, upon the ad
vice of a Twin Falls physician and
was In a highly nervous state.
To the Boise Capital News Dorn
made the following complete state
ment of the affair before leaving for
Echo with his brother, Dr. F. R.
Dorn, and Dr. Cole:
"I was engaged In ranching In
t Washington and not long ago sold
' my property und went to Twin Falls
to look tlio situation over fhere with
a view to engaging In the ranch busi
ness. I caught a severe cold In mak
ing the trip and felt very sick when
I arrived and visited a physician. He
told me I was either coming down
with the smallpox or measles and
gave me some medicine which seemed
to affect my head. Believing I was
?nng to have a lck spell I bought a
ticket to Fendleton and left on the
nert train. When I arrived at Nam
pa I did not feel able to continue my
Journey and so came here to enter
the hospital.
"While on the train, I wrote n
letter to my brother at Echo, Ore.,
and told him of my condition. I did
not have a stamp to mall It and gave
It to the. cabman to mall for me.
Liter at St. Luke' hospital I began
to think he had not mailed It. and I
told the nurse to send a telegram for
me .ind I wrote one. but she did not
take It and being very anxious for
hln. to kn w of my condition, I put
on my overcoat over my shirt and
pnllel on my hoots without lacing
them up and started to take a tele
gram to the carpenters working on
the rear end of the building.
"The nurse ordered me back to my
room and f obeyed her, but I got to
thinking about the telegram and
started out the same way. She then
Informel me she would get an offi
cer to take the telegram for me and
the next thing I knew the deputy
sheriff came In the room. Just as I
was blowing the dirt out of some Ep
som salts I had loose In my pocket.
My shoes were still on and unlaced
and I suppose T looked crazy. He
commanded me to hold out my hands
and exhibited the handcuffs. He
told me he wanted to take me to the
hospital. I did not want to be taken
awry and of course he was obliged
to me frrce. Aftor getting me hand
cuffed he was very abusive, contin
ually asserting his authority.
"During the evening I pleaded to
have a telegram sent to my brother
and, to see the mayor or some other
city' official. Still he gave me the

Conferences for Good Roads.
Albany, N. T., March 25. Repre
sentatives of bunrds of supervisors
and highwny officials throughout the
state have assembled In this city to
day, and will hold conferences until
the Dth of April, to consider the
"goods roads" maps which have been
prepared by the state engineer's de
partment for ratification by the
legislature this session under the
loO.OOO.OOO bond act. The confer
ence will end In a Joint hearing to be
given by the internal affairs commit
tees of the senate and assembly on
April 9. At that time maps may be
expected to bo In shape for the legis
lature to pass upon them.

dency. At Vandergrlft, Pa, Aimer Mc
elroy, a retired merchant, was killed
by being crushed under a fat woman.
McGrny was skating In the rink when
he tripped and fell. This upset the
woman who weighed over 200
pounds. Mcdray received Internal
injuries.
It is claimed that the Pennsylvania
lav.- requiring the sale of 1000 mile
tickets at $20, a 2-cent fare, has
proved a veritable bonanza to the
railroads of that state, the Pennsyl
vania Railway company having taken
In $5,000,000 from that source alone
In the first six months. Last year Its
total passenger traffic amounted to
only $31,000,000.
A feud which began In Nome,
Alaska, five years Bgs, was ended
at Goldfteld, Kev., on March 22, In
a saloon, when Jack Hlnes shot and
killed a man known as Count Pod
horsky of Warsaw, Russia. Hlnes
surrended himself to the authorities.
He Justifies himself on the alleged
grounds of Intimacy between his wife
and Podhorsky.
Edmund W. Pettus of Alabama,
the oldest member of the United
States senate, has Just been chosen
for another term. When that term
expires Senator Pettus will be 91
years of age. He Is now 86, hale and
hearty, and always attends to his of
ficial duties In Washington. He was
llrst elected from. Alabama ten' yeirs
ogo, and was re-elected In 1903. His
third term will begin in 1903.
Following x raid on a resort at
Fort Worth, Texas, County Attorney
Jeff D. McLean was shot and killed
and Hamilton P. Scott, a member of
the raiding party, fatally wounded
by William Thompson, proprietor of
the place. Half nn hour later
Thompson 've surrounded In a lum
ber camp and captured after a des
perate fight In which Thompson re
ceived " wounds that probably will
cause his death.

Ira ho, Charles Spratt and a man
named Rels. quarreled over a wrest
ling match. Rels stabbed Spratt
with a jackknlfe, Inflicting a serious
wound In the thigh.
During the past winter the Cald

16(10 rounds of butter per month.

Near Montplelier, Idaho, ' while
Robert Wutrlck was shooting rab

Smallpox has made Its appearance
In Dakcr City. Tho case Is that of
William W. Henderson who lives on
Auburn avenue between Front and
First stroets. .Mr. Henderson Is a
telephone constructor In thj employ
of the Pacific States Telephone com
pany.
Vancouver, B. C, has followed the
lead of Seattle, Tacoma and Portland
and decided to abolish boxes In all
restaurants. The license commlSHton
ers decided that no restaurant hav
ing boxes could receive a license. The
first restaurant license for $1000 was
taken out March 23.
Annie Qalney, aged 40 years, died
of acute alcoholism at Boise. She
was not dissolute except as regards
the drink habit Her habits had sep
arated her from her husband, since
which time Bhe supported herself by
menial labor. Her huBband and her
town people are highly respected.
At The Dalles Joe Fox committed
burglary on Monday, was tried on
Tuesday, convicted on Wednesday,
sentenced to two years In the peni
tentiary on Thursday, and tent to
Salem on Friday. He was overjoyed
at. the sentence, declaring that It af.
forded him the only means of getting
