Found Rich Land Vacant.
Persons who have heard tales ot
the high priced land In Yakima,
which sells for 2000 an acre, will be
surprised to learn that a young man
recently filed on a 40-acre tract with
in one-quarter of a mile of the city
limits, says a North Taklma dispatch.
The land lies In the valley of the
Taklma river. Just across from the
Cascade mill, and Is said to be rich
bottom land, which has generally
been rendered useless by high water.
The land Is fertile and probably by
the time the claimant has established
his residence by five years' actual
residence and secured a title the riv
er will be under control and danger
of high water obviated.

SMALLER BEET ACREAGE.
Only 2800 Acres of Beets In Union
County In 1907.
The La Grande Chronicle says of
the beet acreage In Grand Rondo
valley for the coming season:
The superintendent reports that
practically all of the growers of last
season are arranging to continue the
work this year. There will be this
Important difference: there will not
be the same acreage, but efforts will
be mudo for more Intense cultivation
and a higher yield per acre.
The total acreage for the coming
season, Mr. ebbelov estimates, will
not exceed 2800 acres. Last year
there was a tctal of 4400 acres. It Is
expected that with more careful and
scientific methods of cultivation the
output will equal that of last year,
notwithstanding the material de
crease In acreage.
On the company's farms good pro
gress Is being made in the prepara
tion for this year's work. There are
already thousands of acres of ground
ployed In readiness for seeding.
There are two carloads of beet
seed somewhere on the way to La
Grande from Ogden. This shipment
has been on the road since tho first
of February, and Is due to arrive at
any time.
This Is Worth Remembering.
