Polk county farms are attracting the attention of newcomers from the middle western states, several of whom have recently purchased farms In that and other Willamette valley counties, says the Oregon Dally Jour nal. One of the finest and best Improv ed farms In Polk county was pur chased a few days ago by Ernest Zlelesch from William Fuqua. ' The place is on the Lucklamute riv er near Parke, and consists of 640 acres, all of which Is in a high Btate of cultivation except 70 acres of wood land. Some timber Is on the place, much of which will make good lum ber. The consideration was 125,000 or about 140 an acre. Land deals of this size are of rare occurrence In this section now, as most of the big donation claims are being cut up Into smaller farms. Mr. Zlelesch came to Oregon from South Dakota last fall and has been quietly looking around to find some thing that Jut suited him, and after negotiations that lasted over several weeks closed the deal with Mr. Fu qua. TEN-ACRK FARMERS COMING. Caldwell, Idaho, Regards Them With Much Favor. "Th-jre Is no better sign of a sta ble, prosperous city at Caldwell than the coming of eastern farmers who want 10-acre farms Instead of ISO acre pastures," said Representative Sam Ballantyne of Caldwell, who came up last night to visit in Boise over Sunday. "The newcomers do not want big farms. They come and look over the ground, study the capabilities of the soil and say that with plenty of wa ter for irrigation, 10 acres is enough for any family. They wilt make it win, too. That much land put Into fruit, well tended, will produce sev eral thousand dollars worth of fruit a year. 'V r "Td garden ,a cow or two, a little land in alfalfa, and he br In t fiuu, it will make any family S ul' pendent. "There Is a project oh foot to buy up a few choice pieces of land near town, subdivide them Into 10 acre tracts, and offer them to the newcomers who believe more In care ful cultivation of a few acres than In .Ill-tending a large farm.
