Nine thousand women and girls
and 32,000 men, all milliners, tailors
and dressmakers, are on strike In Vi
enna for Increase In wages.

Warwick Pottery Co.'s plant at
Wheeling, West Va. March 1C. The
fire was caused by water reaching the
lime bins of an adjacent lumber
yard.
A feud of many years standing was
settled In a North Main street saloon
at I.ns Angeles when J. Estrada, a
tailor, shot and killed A. C. Frainer,
a gambler, who was armed with a
knife and had started to attack his
slayer.
Clarence Johnson, a young farmer,
was robbed of $410 cash on the main
street of Glenwood, Utah, by three
men who escaped. The transaction
was In a crowd, In broad daylight and
was perpetrated by crowding and
Jostling.
Two armed men in broad daylight
held up the clerks in the Jewelry
store In the .Hotel Harvard, Los An
geles, swiped 14000 worth of Jewel
ry, watches and uncut stones, and
escaped. Up to date the thieves have
not been apprehended.
Liebllng Slocum, aged 10 years, of
St. Louis, suicided by swallowing car
bolic acid. Her playmate, Gertrude
Harper, also 10 years of age, was
prevented by her mother from taking
her own life In the same manner.
The Harper child insists that she
and Liebllng "had agreed to suicide."
Upon the request of the prosecu
tion, the trial of Abraham Ruef,
cha-ged with extortion, was post
poned by Judge Punne until Mnrch
25, In order to await the action of the
United States supreme court at Wash
ington on the writ of error granted
to Ruef by Judge Hebhard.

Dr. J. Ji. Roberts, of Dawson,
Alaska, practitioner, 35 years old,
was brought down by two mounted
police on the Amur and taken to the
Insane asylum at New Westminster,
P. C. He went Insane at Dawson
and wanted to operate on all citi
zens promiscuously. Overstudy is as
signed as the cause. He made a
special study of surgery.

Death from Broken Back.
After suffering untold agony for
pearly six months, on account of fa
tal Injuries received by falling from
an electric light pole at enesaeo
last September, O. B. Manley died at
his homo In Colfax at 8 o'clock this
morning.
The accident which led to Manley's
death happened while he waa en
gaged In working on a high pole at
Oencsee and In some unaccountable
way came In contact; with two' cross
wires. It is said that nearly 600
volts passed through his body, hurl.
Ing him to the ground. When picked
up by his fellow workman he waa
believed to be dead, but later a' hasty
examination proved that his back
had been dislocated. He was Imme
dlately removed to his home at Col
fax where he received the very best
medical attendance. During the six
months following the accident and
up to the time of his death he re
mained absolutely helpless, paralyzed
from his shoulders down. During
the past week his condition gred
steadily worse. The deceased waa
about thirty-five and leaves a wife
and two children. He was a faithful
worker and generally considered the
test 'Ineman In the employ of the

was drowned in the Palouse river, at
the Spokane & Inland tunnel, six
miles below Colfax.
John Hough Is dend at La Grande,
aged 71 years. He had been a citi
zen of La Grande for 25 years and
was a Union veteran of the civil
war.
Snows have greatly Impeded farm

the weather is so cold that vegeta
tion Is very backward.

Joaquin Miller, the poet, and his
brother, George Melvln Miller, a
real estate agent of Fugene, have
filed on 75,000 cubic Inches of the
water of the Siuslaw river. In the
western part of Lane county. The
declaration of purposes Is to use the
water for generating electric power
and lights.
The Morgan estate ranch, located
on Sand Hollow, Morrow county, was
sold last Saturday at referee's sale
for $10,498. Mike Kenny was the
purchaser. The ranch consisted of
1100 acres, several hundred acres of
which Is first class wheat land, the
remainder being range land. It Is
considered a very giod buy at the
price named.
