A correspondent writing from Wal la Walla says of the latest literary production of Rev. Andreas Bard, veil known In Pendleton Dr. Andreas Bard, rector of St Paul's church of this city, has just published a five-act tragedy, en titled "Gtafar," which Is based upon historical events during the reign of H.iroun nl Raschld. It aims to Illus trate, according to the preface, "the evolution of love through the con flict of soul anl sense." The book shows that the famous sultan preferred the conversations of his brilliant grand vizier, G la fur, to any pleasure, excepting the society of his beautiful sister. Abassa. In order to combine these pastimes Into one, he decided to effect a mar riage between his two favorites upon a platonlc basis, the condition being that they should never meet except In his Dresenee. After the plight had N-.ecn broken the sullan In his wrath exterminated the entire family of the Barmecides, which Glafar represent ed, and ordered Abassa to be burled alive. Pr. Bard has built upon this his toric foundation an Interesting plot. The tragedy Is written in blank verse and ndapted to stage production. It will also be written for operatic pur pises by Mr. La Forge, Madame Gad ski's accompanist, who has set some of Mr. Pard's lyrics to music nnd has expressed great Interest In the drama and may decide to use It as his libretto for a more serious musi cal work.
