Olaze pitched good ball, for his first appear ance in real fast company, last year, and must have made good or he would not be found on the list of this year's reorganized team. Jack Palmer, Ihe English heavy weight, arrived In New York last week. Palmer Issued a challenge to fight Jack O'ltrlen, Pill Squires nnd Tommy Burns as soon as he touched foot on American soil. Billy Wrenn, the horseman nnd gambler, Is to promote the match. He has guaranteed $20,000 for the fight ers' end of the money. Angels Trouiico Glnnts. The Angels hung one over on the New York Giants Saturday uftemoon, and they did not do the Job by halves, either. Dillon's men hit the ball harder and oftener, ran around the sacks, fielded their positions better, and in fuct excelled the big leaguers In every department of the game, the final score being 6 to 2. George Wheeler of the 'Frisco team, acted us umpire nnd he nnd McGraw nearly came to blows at the begin ning of the seventh Inning. Wheeler called a ball that Bresnahan thought should have been a strlko, and in his anger tho fat little catcher of the Giants threw the ball with all his might straight at Wheeler. The lat ter dodged und called Bresnahan down. McGraw, sitting over on the players' side, took up the argument and made several remarks about Wheeler that brought that Individual from the field. Ho made straight for McGraw, and the two almost came to blows. Wheeler was finally pre vailed upon to finish tho game. Mc Graw brought down the Ire of the bleachers upon himself In the early part of the game by a few of his side lino spocches, Darrovr, a local amateur, made his debut as a catcher for the Angels and showed up well. In the early atone age the "cave" Hon roamed throughout the southern half of Europe, and It Is be lieved that along the Mediterranean, at least. Us extinction was due to prehis toric man. The battle hns gone on ever since. Long ngo lions Were exterminated from Afghanistan, Baluchistan and northern Persia. A century ago they were more or less prevalent on north western India, but now none remain save a few In the Ghcer, a wooded hilly tract of Kuttiawnr, where they are "to some extent preserved by the nawabs of Jooimghoor;" Farslstnn, where the marshes about Nlrls lake af ford shelter nnd the hosts of pigs feeding on the ncorns of the ouk forests furnish subsistence. Similar conditions enable a few llonf to maintain themselves along the lower Euphrates nnd Tigris, hut they were long ago exterminated from nil Asia Minor, Syria, Arabia, Esj-ni and Alge ria. From Abyssinia and the southern Sahara southward to the Orange river Hons still exist except In the most pop ulous (Vstrletx, and In some places arc very Humorous. There seems never to have been more than one siiccles, nor, in spite of the former belief In the "innneless Hons of Guzerat" and the "black muned" ones of other places. Is any variety well lo calized. Lions with full manes have been shot in India as well as those with hardly nny. and "out of fifty male Hon sUlns scarcely two will be" found alike In nlur nnd length of mane." Ernest Inzer-mil's "Life 0f Mammals." THE FLAG REVERSED. A Fisherman' Emblem That Tells of Ulsti-eHs ami Hope. One of the frequent slants In the ports nlon-? the eastern coast Is that of a Dsliinj; schooner coining into the har bor with an American tlag hoisted at the mainmast head In Its reverse posi tion. To the interested spectators that flag always brings a pans of distress, for it means that one or more of the crew nre"iilsfin,'" Uirouth some calam ity of the sea. But to the members of the craft Itself the signal Is not always an emblem of woe. The flag Is hoisted, from their Viewpoint, to notify those concerned that the complement of the ship 1b not fulj, and Uiey live on hope for a long time before they acknowl edge that the men who have disappear ed are really lost. A stranger to seafaring ways asked the skipper of one " theie fishing schooners the other day what the dis tress signal meant, and he was set right by the eapialn, who remarked In the most cheerful way In the world: "They're missing out of th" crew, of course, but we haven't given them up by a long sight. Ye see, they may have been picked up by soiuo other boat nu' carried off to th' other Bide. Oh, no, we doa'give them up just be cause we've mTssed them! It's more than likely they'll turn up yet." New Organization Would I'rotwt the Priceless l'ororts of Oregon and ut the Same Time Disseminate Useful Knowledge on the Pr;et::-'Ioi mil I'rescrvuilmi of Forests Local , Branch May lo Organised In Pendleton. Pendleton and Umatilla county peo ple are interested In the Oregon For estry association which has been or ganized In Portland for the purpose of encouraging a sentiment for the preservation of Oregon forests. It Is possible thut a local branch of the association will be organized In Pendleton. The matter Is now being considered by the women's clubs, and It Is hoped that a forest preservation sentiment may be aroused In the city. A circular letter sent out from the office of the secretary, Anson E. Ca hoon of Portland, suys of Its objects: The new association will deal with forest problems from a practical point of view. It will take up and discuss practical questions from the view point of the lumbermen, the miner and tho rancher. , It will aim towards the dissemination of the knowledge of forestry. In devising means of bet ter protection against fire that will be applicable to all parts of the state, and In a more economic utilization of forest products. Oregon has un object lesson In the east of the wanton destruction of tim ber, and moreover she has an oppor tunity to porflt by this lesson and use her forests more wisely and judicious ly than they did. The forest of Oregon Is Its greatest asset, and lumbering its greatest In dustry. The output of the mills for 1006 had a financial value of $30, 000,000. The 20,000 men employed In the lumber industry In Oregon In 1906, received $11,696,000 in wageB. It Is conservatively estimated that more than twice the mill cut of timber is destroyed annually by forest fires. The whole United States will within a few years look to Oregon and the Pacific coast for its lumber supply. There is more standing timber In Or egon than in any other state in the Union, so every patriotic citizen of the state should show an Interest in everything connected with this great wealth. We owe It to posterity not to destroy tluir heritage for the sake of present returns, and we should do all In our power to pass on to them the great natural wealth that we fell heir to. It Is hoped that you will give your support to this association and hence assist In promoting the cause of for estry and protecting the forest wealth of our state. Very truly yours, ANSON E.
