local lumber movements, a ship will

The steamship Olymplu, Capt. Alfred
Croskty, Is now at Mellingham load
ing a shipment of 16,000,000 shingles
which have laid In dry kilns since
l:it August because of the owner's
Inability to secure rail transportation.
The shingles will be taken to San
Francisco and shipped by rail over
the Southern Pacific to points In
Texa. The freight bill on this large
cargo of thlngles from Bolllnirhrim,
to Sun Francisco will be 318,750.
The rail rate from San Francisco
to Texas points Is 31.30 more per
thousand than the rate from Pell"

New York, March 9. Prof. T. W.
Richards, who has been chosen to go
to Germany this year under the agree
ment sntered Into between the Oer
mon emperor and Harvard University
for the exchange of Instructors, sail
ed for Europe today. He will go to
the University of Berlin and will give
there a course of lectures In chemis
try on "The Fundamental Constants
of Physical Chemistry." The course
will consist of two lectures a week,
but the greater part of his work will
consist In directing the advanced re
searches of a few students.

Mr. und Mrs. Mike Gratz left this
morning for Billings, Mont, where
they expect to reside.
Miss Jennie Dykes of Milton, Is In
the city the guest of Miss Bessie Mc
Danlel for a short time.
Frank W. Kettenbach and George
H. Black, of Lewlston, Idaho, have
been visitors In the city today.
Mrs. Elmer P. Dodd was a visitor
In Pendleton a few days this week,
from her home at Hermlston.
Mrs. William Roles and children
will leave today for Tacoma to Join
Mr. Roles, who Is now located there
and where the family will reside here
after. Lee Rlnehurt and family of Dayton,
Wash., have been here today on their
return from a trip to southern Cali
fornia, Arkansus and other places for
(he benefit of their health.
Harry E. Edwards arrived early this
morning from Pennsylvania, and will
make his home here with S. A. Barnes
and family. Mr. Edwards had been
away for four years and lost his wife
last December.
Sol Paum, now upon the road for
a Chicago cloak house, has returned
to the city after having traveled over
the western states during the past
few months, meeting win good suc
cess In his new line of work.
R. A. Thompson left Monday for
Weston, where he has accepted a po
sition In a flouring mill. Mrs. Thomp
son will not go for a week or two, or
until Mr. Thompson fits up a home for

friends of Christian science were add

lions. Among the new defendants Is
Mrs. Mary Chamberlain of Spokane.
The others are mostly residents of
Poston and Chicago.

FIVE MEN WERE ARRAIGNED.
Mc.Munus and Ohers Will Plead on
Monday Next.
In the circuit court this morning
a criminal session was held and five
accused men were brought up for
arraignment
John P. McManus was first
brought into court to plead to the
charge of murder now standing
against him. However, one of his
attorneys, Judge Fee, was absent
from the city and at the request of
Colonel J. H. Raley, the other coun
sel, the time for pleading was sot
for 1-30 Monday afternoon.
Horhcrt Watson was the next to
have his case called. He was charged
with having stolen a watch from
Frank Duprat. After a brief confer
ence with his lawyer, J. R. Raley,
the prisoner entered a plea of guil
ty. The time for sentence was set
for 1:30 Monday afternoon.
Thomas Evans, another young
man, was accused of having tried to
pass a had check cn some people In
Echo and he pleaded guilty to the
charge. The time for sentencing him
was also set for 1:30 Monday. The
prisoner was represented in court by
W. C. E, Prultt.
C. C. Sabln, alias J. B. Kerr, was
the third prisoner. He was indicted
under the name of Kerr for living off
the earnings of a prostitute. But
when asked by the court If that was
his true name he said no, and gave
his real cognomen as C. C. Sabln. He
said he desired to secure counsel and
would have a lawyer by Monday.
Hi! ball was fixed at 3250. The
principal witness against the pris
oner is Josie Lamont, with whom he
Is said to have lived, and District
Attorney Phelpe asked that she too
be placed under bonds to appear at
the trial. The court ordered that
she appear at 1:30.
Walter Trwln, accused of having
robred J. W. Myrlck of 340 was then
arrnlgne'd and took until Monday at
1-30 to plead. - His ball was fixed
at 3500. Irwin Is. being defended by
W. C. E. Prultt.

The Glee club of Whitman college
consisting of 17 members, will appear
In this city March 23, at the Presby
terian church, under the auspices of
the debating team of the Pendleton
academy.
Prof. A. C. Jackson, the baritone
soloist, Is a great attraction of the
club, having one of the most excellent
baritone voices.

Death of Mrs. Goodson.
Mrs. Fred Goodson, wife of one of
the Pacific Coast Construction com
pany's employes, died at 3 o'clock
lust night ut the Means hous-s on the
corner cf Alta and Cosble streets.
Death was caused by pneumonia. The
funeral service will be held at 1:30
p. m. tomorrow and will be conduct
ed by Rev. Robert Warner, pastor of
the M. F. church, at Rader's under
taking parlors.

Caleb Powers Anniversary.

Powers, Kentucky's most noted pris
oner, will tomorrow complete seven
years of confinement In Kentucky
Jails. It was on March 10, 1900, that
he was arrested on the charge of com
plicity In the assassination of Gover
nor Goebel. March 10, 1907, finds
him still In jail waiting tor the fourth
trial of his case, which Is now set
for the June term of court at George
town. During the seven years of his
imprisonment Powers has occupied
jails In Lexington, Louisville, Forank
fort, Georgetown and Newport. He
has been tried three" times, and has
j been twice sentenced to life lmprison
I ment and once given the death pen
; alty.
