The Portland Chamber of Com merce has started a movement to create a national park on Mount Hood. President Coleman, of Willamette university (Methodist) announces that an old and wealthy resident of the Institution has given It $50,000 cash, desiring thnt his name be with held for the present. Nels Tyberg, a logger at the Tv- berg logging camp on Lewis and Clark river, had his right leg fright fully mutlliated-by a log rolling up on it. The limb was amputated, but Tyberg died from shock and loss of blood. Herbert Knox Smith on March 4 became commissioner of corpora tions to succeed James Garfield, who upon that date became secretary of the Interior. E. Dana Durand of California Is now the chief deputy commissioner of corporations. The Clarkston. Wash.. Chamber of Commerce and the Vlneland Indus trial club are working conjointly to have the two towns Incorporated un der one charter. At present their only municipal government is through township organization. Some of the democratic leaders in Indiana are said to bitterly resent the attitude of Thomas Taggart, the national democratic chairman, to ward temperance legislation at the present session cf the Indiana legis lature. Mr. Taggart. It Is charged. Big Chief Pleasant Porter, ruler of 10,000 Creek Indians, mav be one of the democratic candidates for the Lnlted States senate from the new state of Oklahoma, Like Senator Curtis of Kansas, Porter's father was a white man and his mother asquaw. Two masked robbers boarded a Missouri Pacific passenger train at Pittsburg, Kui.sas, and "went nrough the passengers. They got wuu ensn and a number of watches. l.ou Jesse, a zinc miner, undertook to resist and was shot dead. The robbers escaped. The German National bank Is short J 185.000, stolen by the fore man of the government printing of. flee, named Gruenenthal, who killed himself as soon as the theft was de tected. Gruenenthal Is believed to hiive stolen I1J1.900 missing for several years, but for which no one could be found accountable. n. O. Badglty was seriously, though not fatally poisoned at Wash tucna by putting some tacks in his mouth while fastening down a car pet. The tacks were taken from a receptacle containing blue vltrol, some small fragments of which went Into his mouth with the tacks. He wne very sick for several days. The Montana hotel at Burley, Ida ho, completed a year ago at a cost of $3000, was totally destroyed by fire on February 5. Insurance on the building and contents amounted to $2300. The fire started from a stove on the second floor. The furniture on the first floor was saved. The building was owned by J. P. Shevlln. Vancouver, B. C, women are cir culating a petition which will be for warded to the Dominion government "t Ottawa, suggesting a reduction of the $500 dollar Chinese poll tax on Chinamen coming to Canada as do mestic Bervnnts. The petitioners as sert that the Chinese afford the only reliable source of supply of compe tent household servants at moderate prices for the services rendered. I.ewlston, Idaho, will soon vote up on two bond propositions, one of $85,000 for the buying of an addl tlor.al pump having a dally capacity of 2,500,000 gallons, the purchase of a motor to operate the same, the construction of a pump house and the extension of mains and laterals. The other Is for an issue of bonds In the sum of $8000 for the purpose of furnishing meters to put on the ser vice pipes all over the system. At Marlon, Ohio, Walter W. Sav age, of Syracuse, N. Y., and Andy Carothers are under arrest charged with treating six young girls from 12 to 14 years of age to drugged wine after inveigling them into their suite of rooms at a hotel under pretext of taking their pictures and giving them art lessons. Savage and Carothers were with difficulty saved from a furious mob. They were landed In Jail and guarded by a heavy force of police and deputy sheriffs. Mrs. Lottie Wallau, of New York city, accused of hastening the death of her mother with poison to relieve her suffering by cancer, has been held by the grand Jury on a charge of murder, nnd released on $50,000 ball. The Wallaus are wealthy, and Mrs. Wallau's affection for her moth er has never been questioned. The old lady had long been afflicted with a cancerous growth which Involved nearly the whole visceral region, and for months had been demented from Incessant suffering. Her daughter Is suspected of poisoning her, but the charge remains to be proven. To Prevent Teleplione Merger. Albany, N. Y., March 7. Attorney General Jackson does not propose that the telephone companies In upper New York state shall form a combine If he can find the legal means to prevent It In response to an order obtained by the attorney general the representa tives of several of the telephone com panies appeared today before Joseph A. Lawson as referee to tell what they know regarding the proposed merger of the Bell company with the Inde pendent companies, In order to form d monopoly of the up state telephone business. Members of the Knights of the Maccabees from many parts of Texas, gathered In Dallas today at the opening of th.e triennial session of the state division of the order. The sessions ore being held In the fair grounds auditorium and will continue over two days The reports of the several officers show the order to be making gratifying numerical progress In Texas.
