Dr. Oronhyatekha. head and founder of the Independent Order of Fores ters, died at Augusta. Ga., March 1. He was a native of Canada, and a full-blooded Mohawk Indian. An unlocked switch wrecked a pas senger train on the I. A., S. P. & S. L. within the city limits of Los Angeles. C. P. Hamilton, the engineer, and Walter Pruett, 14 years old, were killed. Several others were Injured. Baron Budberg. ex-chief of the Esthonlan nobility and a member of the council of the empire, was set up on by six unknown men while driving near his country seat, near Reval. Russia, and killed. Of two servants accompanying the baron, one was killed and the other was wounded. A mountain in Potenza, near the vil lage of Montemurro, Is slipping Into the valley In a series of landslides and threatens to overwhelm the village The people are fleeing in panic. Only a spur of the mountain Is preventing the destruction of the village, and this resistance apparently soon will be overcome. New York city is the greatest Y. M. C. A. center In the world. Willis, a Minneapolis, Minn.. hat manufacturer, while on a recent visit to Los Angeles, as a "Joke" scat tered a large quantity of finely ground cayenne pepper throughout the Bur bank theater. The performance was nearly broken up and hundreds of people were compelled to leave the theater. Burbank was given his choice of a 1100 fine or 100 days In Jail. He chose the former. In speaking of a possible solu tlnn of the Philippine problem, comes f irth with the Interesting and novel suggestion that the United States should take two permanent coaling stations in the Islands, that two should be given to Englnnd and that for these concessions the two nations should Jointly guarantee the territorial Integ rity of the islands after they have been granted Independence. Rev. George Brinsfleld, said to be the oldest preacher In the world, died recently near Huron, Izard coun ty, Arkansas, at the age of 109 years. Mr. Brinsfleld was a local Methodist preacher and a remarkable teacher. He came to Arkansas 80 years ago from Alabama. He always attended he conferences of his church, and at the age of 100 years he walked to Batesville, a distance of 50 miles, to attend the conference at that place. Railroad laborers Needed. There Is a great scarcity of men on the Kiparia extension oi ine Northern Pacific road, according to Cliff M. Wilson, postmaster of Sil cotl, who passed through the city last evening en route to Kendrlck. Mr. Wilson says the company had not more than half the men It could use, and the result Is that the work not progressing as rapidly as It might. The road has about a month s heavy work at Granite Point, where blasting has to be done. Mr. Wilson expects to see the entire road gra.'ed within the next two months. ' 0 A farmers' mutual fire Insurance company Is being organized at Pull man, Wash. E. A. Bryan, president of the Agricultural college, Is chair man of the organizing committee. Efforts to Incorporate Connell, Wash., have fallen through, the townslte company and the citizens deadlocking on the question of buy ing the waterworks In the event of Incorporation. The company asks $15,000, which tho other faction de clares Is too much. The experience of Taklma county with wooden bridges Is to the effect that adding the cost of repairs for SO years to the original cost, the amount would in most cases Just about equal that of Iron bridges with concrete piers resting on bed rock. At Baker City the high school, the central school and the South Baker school buildings will be remodeled; and the last named building will be replumbed. North Baker has a new school house, and a new heating plant will be put In the Brooklyn school building. From August 1 last to March 1 the total precipitation at Pullman, Wash., has been 22.91 Inches, which Is slightly more than the precipita tion for any entire previous year at that point during the past 27 years. The most that has ever fallen during any previous year was 22.S Inches. A. L. Flewelllng has purchased a large tract of timber on the Cedar river In King county, about 30 miles southwest of Seattle, from John K. Stack of Escanaba, Mich. The price named Is $150,000. There are about 40,000 acres In the tract, all heavily timbered, carrying about 150,000,- 000 feet of timber. The largest theater In the world Is the opera houso In I'arls.
