Danger of Using Alcoholic Mixtures or Coal Tar Tablets. The most dangerous thing that ono can do when affected with a cough or cold is to use a medicine that contains whisky or a tablet that is made of some coal tar product. Putting aside all moral objections to filling up with whisky or drugs because one has a cold, the injurious physical effect should be sufficient to keep one from using these strong medicines. No woman's ppv. ness can be complete without children; it is her nature to love and want them as much so as it is to love the beau tiful and oure. The critical ordeal through which the expectant mother must pass, however, is go fraught with dread, pain, suffering and danger, that the very thought of it fills her with apprehension and horror. There is no necessity for the reproduction of life to beeither painful or dangerous. The use of Mother's Friend so prepares the system for the coming event that it is safely passed without any danger. There was a time when Lard was considered the only shortening. To-day, the only people who use lard for shortening and frying pur poses are those who are not familiar with the virtues of Cottolent. It pays to be abreast of the times. Cottolene is not only superior to lard from a health standpoint, being a vegetable rather than an animal product, but it will make more palatable food than lard; and it is more economical than lard because, being richer, one third less is required than of lard or cooking butter. Lard cooked food is not digestible because lard is a hog-fat product. Cottolene makes food more digestible and healthful because it is es sentially a product of nature and contains only that which is digestible, healthful, and a real means of sustaining life. If your grocer is an up-to-date, progressive man, he will have Cottolene in stock. More than that, if he has ever used it in his own family, he will recommend it in preference to lard or cooking butter. If he does not do this, it is only because he is unfamiliar with the virtues of Cottolene. Prove our claims to your own satisfaction by giving the product a fair test. Give Cottolene a good, fair test, use it according to directions, and note the benefit to vour digestion. You'll never go back to Lard. COTTOLENE was granted a GRAND PRIZE (highest possible award) over all other cooking fats at the recent Louisiana Purchase Exposition, and food cooked with COTTOLENE another GRAND PRIZE. Polydore Moens , Proprietor , WfLLBIRRIGATEII CENTRAL OREGON PORTLAND COMPANY CONTRACTS WITH STATE Twelve Thonsand Acres Will Re Re claimed in Northern Lake County at Cost of $421,000 Land All Be Irrigated Under tlie Carey Act and Will Cost State About $33 Per Acre. A large irrigation contract was yes terday entered into between the Mate land board and the Portland Irriga tion company, which Involves $421, 000, and the reclamation of 12,000 acres of lind near Paisley, In the northern part of Lake county, says the Salem Statesman. The contract is to be In effect six months after the United States government has contracted with the state to turn over th's land for reclamation pur poses. Fy the terms of the contract with the Irrigation company, any ono who Is a bona fide citizen of the United States can settle on 10 acres of land within this area described In the con tract, by agreeing to pay fifty cents per acre assessed for the reclama tion lien thereon,, and when 80 per cent is paid in, the land becomes the settlers, and a detd for the land is made over to him. The contract was signed at the meeting of the ttate land board yes terday, over which Governor Cham berlain phealried, and Is considered a very good one in many respects. It !. estimated that the work of re clamation will cost the company about J25 per acre, while the con tract with the state will cost the state but $35. It Is even figured that It may cost the Company more than $25 in some Instances. They are to hulld a large reservoir eighty feet high, about fif teen miles above the lands to be re claimed, Cm the Chewacan river, with R storing capacity of water sufficient to do the work of reclamation. The company agrees to maintain all dams, main canals, laterals, flumes, works and weirs, which are to re main their property. No land shall be sold before the date of reclamation, and the com pany notified that they can sell lands. This will prevent further trouble like that had between the board and the Columbia Southern Irrigation com pany near Bend. The company argees that they will deliver between May 23 and Septem ber 1 of each year, two acre feet of water for each Here of land for or dinary Irrigation purposes. The con tract is a voluminous document, set ting forth In detail the work of re clamation, and embodies maps and blue prints of the section of land to be reclaimed, cuts of dams, and oth er work on the canals, etc. This contract opens, the way for reclamation work, and the settling of lands In another direction, but covers a great many of the points stated In the Irrigation bills, that were killed In the present legislature, but does not touch on rlparlnn or vested rlght'i, and the sale of water rights I up to the Irrigation company, and the coitract specifies shall be per petual, and embrace a proportional Interest in the reclamation works. !t Is a well known fact that this nature of work was' discouraged by the opposition to Irrigation of lands by representatives and senators of the last assembly. In fact, Represen tative Wilson was heard to remark that "we do not want It advertised that w are Irrigating these lands, and have settlers come In here from the outside." On top of his asser tion, it Is alleged that he was speak ing for th Standard Oil Interests, who control a large portion of these water r'ghts throughout the state, and don't want them disturbed.
