Gilbert of Pilot Rock, who came to Umatilla county several years ago from the corn belt of Iowa, has Just received a clipping from the Iowa Homestead, an agricultural pa per of that state, giving an account of the prize ear of corn exhibited at the Iowa corn convention recently held at the Iowa Agricultural col lege. To the former corn growers now residing In Umatilla c'ounty, the description of this prize ear will be especially Interesting and the East Oregonlan cheerfully reprints the ar ticle, which Is as follows: We present herewith an illustration of the remarkable ear shown at the convention held at the Iowa Agricul tural college recently by D. L. Pas cal and sisters, of DeWItt, Iowa, says the Homestead. This ear was pro nounced by Professors Shammel and Holden to be the best that ha ever been placed on exhibition in the corn belt It 1b 10 H inches long. 7 7-8 Inches in circumference at a point 3 Inches from the butt, and ' Inches at a point two Inches from the tip. It weighs 19 ounces and carries SO rows of kernels. It was raised on land that was In corn the fifth year and averaged 65 bushels per acre. It 1b of the Reld's Yellow Dent variety and has been grown on the same fnrm for a num ber of years. Another ear shown by the Pascal firm, taken from the same field, was a remarkably close second to the champion, thus Indicating that there might not after all be so much guess work about the fixing of char acteristics In corn as men have been Inclined to think In the past. The sale of this ear for the neat sum of $160 makes it a record break er In more ways than one. It was purchased by Mr. Pascal and will be used no doubt as foundation material for another crop. ' Corns Mala and Webb SCROFULil A FAMILY BIOOD TAfflT Scrofula is not a disease that is acquired, under ordinary circumstances. It is a deep-seated family blood taint, handed down from generation to gen eration, blighting the lives and sapping the vital forces of innocent persons who have inherited this legacy of disease. Parents who are blood relations or who have a consumptive tendency, or blood disease of any character, art sure to transmit it to their offspring, and it usually takes the form of Scrofula. Swollen glands, brittle bones, weak eyes, sores and eruptions on the body, Catarrh, and often deformities with hip disease, are the principal ways in which the trouble is manifested. In some cases the blood is so filled with scrofulous germs and poisons that from birth the sufferer is an object of pity because of suffering and a total lack of health, while in other Instances favorable surroundings and prudent living hold the disease in check until later in life. A deep-seated blood disease like Scrofula can only be reached by the very best constitutional treatment. A remedy is required that can renovate the entire blood supply and drive out the scrofulous and tuberculous deposits. 5. S. S. is the greatest of all blood purifiers ; it goes to the very bottom of all blood disorders and removes every taint and poison from the circulation, makes rich, healthy blood and cures Scrof ula permanently. S. S. S. supplies the PURELY VEGETABLE weak, diseased blood with the rich, health. sustaining properties it is in need of, and makes this life stream fit to supply every port of the system with strength and vitality. Scrofula yields to S. S. S. because it is a natural blood puri fier. Write for book on the blood and any medical advice desired. Nc charge for either. THE SWiFT SPECIFIC CO., ATLANTA, KA.
