"That the stock of Alberta at pres ent roaming the prairie, particularly the cattle, are in a precarious condi tion there is no doubt," said Felix McHugh In an Interview In Spokane. He Is one of the largest Individual stock owners In Alberta, and has just arrived from his ranch, 60 miles southeast of Calgary. Mr. McHugh left the city Just a month ago, expecting to be back In a few days. Upon arriving at the ranch the cold weather having set in, he found that It would be Impossible to return to Calgary without his interests suffering. Mr. McHugh Is displaying several frostbitten fingers which tend to forcibly demonstrate his encounter with the elements in rounding up his cattle, says a Spokane paper. He has succeeded In rounding up about 3000 of his cattle, and of this number alone he expects to lose more than per cent In spite of the fact that they are corralled and fed during the greater part of the cold spell. Asked what he thought of the chances of the stray cattle which had no shelter and were not fed, Mr. Mc Hugh stnted that their chances were very poor. Thousands of cattle belonging to the large outfits, who either did not have the hay or do not as a rule feed In the winter months, have perished, and a great many of those that re main are In too poor a condition to pull through till spring. In his opin ion, If the weather does not moderate shortly It will tell seriously on the horses, particularly the older ones nnd the mares. Another serious detriment to the welfare of the cattle nnd horses In general Is the crust of snow thnt has formed, In some plnces strong enough to carry the animals. Not only does this crust hinder the animals to a cer tain extent from pawing for the grass, but in their weakened condition when they break through they are often unable to got up. Former United States Senator Hen ry Heltfelt, mayor of Lewiston, ar rived last evening on a delayed train, says the Boise Capital News. He says Lewiston Is very prosperous and they look for big things this year. The Milwaukee road Is almost certain to come to Lewiston, he says; the Lew iston & Southeastern Electric line is financed and will be built to Grange ville from Lewiston; the Inland Elec tric line from Spokane will reach Moscow by the middle of the summer and will get into Lewiston by next spring and the Short Line extension down the Snake connecting Hunting ton and Lewiston Is already started. Altogether the outlook Is very bright - Senator Heltfelt Is one of a com mittee sent down by the Lewiston people to oppose the creation of the new counties of Clearwater and Lolo out of Nez Perce; he thinks the time for a division is not now, as the next few years of railroad building will likely change the conditions to such an extent that any division made now would not be satisfactory later on. He has a remonstrance with over 2600 names against the creation of these counties. j An avalanche came down upon Kirwin, Wy., destroying several houses.
