J BEST OF LIQUORS and CIGARS vVEINHARDTS SPECIAL BREW. 818 MAIN STREET. FERGYJS Among the Exchanges of the Inland Empire Was Mux Mox Murdered? There Is a growing Impression niiuing the Indians In tnls section of the mate that George Mox Mox was murdered, and that his assailant fired the house In an effort to hide the crime. The Indians may ask Coroner Vassar to hold an Inquest. They do not feel especially kindly towards him because ho did not make an In vagination the day of the fire, al though r.eorge's body was held a day ami a half for him after the crema tion. There Is a dispute as to the hour of the fire. The Indians say It was nbnut 2 or 2:30 o'clock In the morn ing, while white people avow It was not until 4 o'clock In the morning. On Indian living n few hundred yards from the Mux Mux house swears that ho heard a shut fired at about the time tho house was destroyed. He declares It came from the direction of the Indian's home. The murder talk Is largely due, it is thought to the fact that Mox Mox had a number of bitter .enemies In this section of the state. The day of the funeral but one Indian aside from the wife and son, attended the serv ices. Jullaetta (Idaho) Journal. A Down O. It. N. Slides. With slides and blockades all along the O. The storm was much more severe west of The Dalles and It Is impos sible to form any idea of the situa tion It caused unless one traveled h road. There were a dozen slides and blockades between Horse Tall fall (which are situated Deiween Bonneville and Onednta) and Port land, all the way from 16 to- 100 feet long and 6 to 20 feet deep. A rotary was sent out nnd over 800 men put to work, nnd It miiy well be Imagined they worked with a will all day yesterday and last night, and, for thut matter, are still at It. But the company camo out on top nnd this morning hnd tho satisfaction of get ting the road open for traffic The Dalles Chronicle Lostlno to Hnvo Railroad. The citizens of Lostlno wore plens antly surprised when Surveyor Wat son and his men cam, rrom jaiucr prlse Monday, and Informed them that they were authorized from head quarters to survey a branch line from I the mnln lino to Lontlne and asked i that they locate their depot site. 1 Messrs. Robert Mays and F. S. Fltz- patrick were tho committee who went it-it h Rnrvevor Watson to designate the depot site, which Is in the east nnrt of town, near tho school nouse. There has been much Interest mani fested of late In the mineral prospects south of town nnd it Is believed this mnv he n. ble drawing card for Los- tine making it the center of supplies to the mineral belt. It Is hoped the patient waiting of the citizens or tnai iiri mnv he rewarded by satisfactory results from their mines. La Grande Observer. Idaho Penltenttary Statistics. An interesting reDort was handed in in tho hnnsn vesterdav by the house commltteo on state affairs, concerning the state penitentiary. The committee finds that the place Is badly crowded, with 222 prisoners In all, as the number of prisoners has Increased 42 since two years ago, and there was a shortage of room even at that time. A new cell house, to ac commodate 80 prisoners, Is partly built; the committee recommends an appropriation of 835,000 to finish It. a recommendation is also made for two new buildings, a kitchen and din ing room and a living room for the female prisoners. While not all the prisoners are em ployed through the winter months, there Is sufficient work there for all the Inmates during the rest of the year. Boise Statesman. REPORT OF.
