houses of the legislature. It requires
that after October 1, 1907, the labels
on baking powder on sale In the state

The Missouri house passed the anti
cigarette bill by a vote of 100 to 22.
The bill prohibits the sale, manufac
ture or giving away of cigarettes or
cigarette papers. Under the provis
ions of the bill a man can make his
own cigarettes but he cannot give
them away without violating the law.
Punishment is fixed at a fine of from
$10 to $100.
Minister Rockhlll at Manchuria, ad
vises the state department that the
Chinese government, has been In
formed by the Russian minister at
Pekln that Russia, would complete
the evacuation of Manchuria at once,
leaving only the railway guard, which
Is in accordance with the treaty of
Portsmouth. There are about 20,000
troops to be withdrawn.

Near lone, a fine cow belonging to
Mat Halvorsen, tipped out of the
pasture, fell and rolled 100 yards
and was killed.
J. W. Becket, a big wheat grower
of Eight Mile, Morrow county, was
rented his ranch to his sons and will
move to Portland.
Edward Hugglns is dead at Tacoma
where he bad lived since 1850. He
was the last factor sent upon Puget
Sound by the Hudson Bay company.
The aggregate value of hogs, cat'
tie, sheep and horses' shipped from
Pullman, Wash., during 1906, was
$150,000 somewhat more than dur
Ing any two years previous.
The publicity bureau of Lewlston
and Clarkston has decided to try to
raise $15,000 for advertising purposes,
as the original sum of $10,000 (and
more) was so easily raised.
A joint committee from the Idaho
and Washlngto legislatures will meet
at Clarkston and Lewlston to consider
the issue of a free bridge across the
Clearwater between those towns.
At Heppner Frank Hale and Owen
French were fined $25 each and costs
for riding their horses on the side
walk. Hale was also fined another
$25 for resisting an officer. Both
were drunk.
Senator Dubois has taken up with
the general land office the matter of
obtaining a patent to the land on
which the town of Mullan, Idaho,
stands. The land remains unpatented.
Citizens are anxious to secure a title
from the government
At Kahlotus, William Russell,
Grace Wllmar and Pearl Cotts are
under arrest charged with selling
liquor to minors. Hugh McOutre,
James Gordon, William Harris and
J. P. Harris are also under arrest,
charged with gambling. All will be
tried at Pasco.
The steamer George W. Elder, the
first vessel to arrive up the river
from Astoria since the Columbia be
came blocked with Ice, arrived at
Portland January 24. The Elder
rammed the Ice pack at full speed
and this so loosened the floe that It
broke and floated off down stream.
Owing to the abundance of native
grasses in the mountains of central
and southern Malheur county, but a
few bands of sheep out of the num
erous ones that have hitherto been
fed In the valley are now being fed.
The sheepmen feel positive they will
be able to winter their sheep In the
mountains during the remainder of
the winter.

the new depot have been set, and the
people of this pluce now have the as
surance of the completion of the same
within 30 days. In the meantime the
box cars are being used, and no need
to ad that the manager is a busy
man nowadays.

opened at Hermlston yesterday and
S. R. Oldaker has the distinction of
sending the first message from Her

The past couple of days has brought
19 carloads of freight Into Hermla
ton, consisting of lumber, brick, , hay
and dump cars, the latter of which
were loaded on three cars and are
for the reclamation project
Hermlston is doubling up every
week. - Twenty-seven buildings are
now under course of construction,
many being about half completed and
the sound of the hammer would al
most deafen one. Many are working
over time at night to keep the buei
ness moving.

Ketchikan, Alaska, took place recent
ly. Andrew Martngn shot and killed
Jack Leavers during a quarrel over
