RAILROAD
SHORTENS DISTANCE AROUND GLOBE
' City of Mexico. Jan. 24. When
General Porflrio Dlat, president of the
Republic of Mexico, and Sir Weetman
Pearson nominally superintended the
unloading of the first ton of freight
from the steamboat Venture and saw
it loaded Into a freight car ready to
be transported over night across the
Isthmus of Tehauntepec and the Te-
hauntepeo national railroad, to Coatz
acoalcos ready for reshlpment by
steamer to New York, they commer
cially brought San Francisco 11,627
miles nearer New Tork. The distance
around the Horn between, the two
points is 16.552 miles, while that via
the Isthmus of Tehuantepec practical
ly an all-water route, is only 4925
miles.
The great Tehuantepec highway
from one extremity of the northern
hemisphere to the other, the competl
tor of the Panama canal, was opened
to the traffic of the world and the
dream which was born in the mind of
Herman Cortes almost 400 years ago
came true.
Today. 8 roars before the possible
completion of the Panama canal,
there is opened from one ocean to the
other an American isthmian route
contemplated by Its builders not as
a makeshift pending the opening of
the Panama route, but contemplated
f actively and . effectively compete
with the Panama route when the ca
nal shall have been completed and
snail nave oeen oeveiopea 10 us ffrcm- i
e extent.
Thirty-five millions of dollars gold,
have already been expended in per
fecting this project, and $15,000,000
more will bo expended before all Is
completed.
A land-locked commodious and al
most ideal harbor has been built Into
a sandy beach at Salina Cruz. Docks
and warves and warehouses sufficient
to accommodate the shipping for
years to come have been constructed.
Upon these has been erected the most
Improved and modern docking machinery.
The whole length of the road is 190
milpp, while the distance from one
port to the other, as the crow flies,
is 125 miles.
At Coaisocoalcos the freight that
yesterday or the day before was lifted
frr.m the hold of the vessel from San
Fraunlsco, Honolulu or the orient, will
be tjken from the freight cars and
deposited In the hold of the vessel
bound for New York or Liverpool
with nil the ease that the most mod
ern docking machinery makes pos
sible. In this manner is fulfilled the dream
of Cortes, who in the 1520s was so
sure that ocean would meet ocean
across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec
that he asked for and received from
Charles V of Spain an Immense tract
of land on (he Isthmus. This land is
now known as las Marquesanas, or
the estates of the Marquis, Cortez
having prior to the time of the land
grant lieetl made the Marquis of the
Valley ci Oaxaca.
The map of the world best illus
trates the commercial importance of
this great project which has now be
come a reality, especially so when it
Is understood that it is claimed by
the builders and admitted by the best
shippln gauthoritles of the world that
the cost of unloading and reloading
It at the other terminus will not be
as great as that expended In the long
er haul to the Isthmus of Panama,
and-he necessary canal tolls.
The actual difference in distance
from New York to San Francisco be
tween the Tehauantepcc and the Pan
ama route Is 1182 miles, the former
being 4926 miles and the latter 6107.
The average saving In distance is
about 1250 miles. The ordinary
freight steamer makes about 10 miles
an hour, or 250 miles a day. It will
take a steamer about one day to pass
through the canal and the freight
about two days to cross the Isthmus,
Inclusive of the docking, unloading
and reloading, leaving btlll four day-)
to the advantage tf the Tehauntepec.
