Elbert Hubbard In "the Man of Sorrows." DUBOIS OPPORTUNITY. Senator Fred T. Dubois of Idaho, "whose gallant fight against Mormon ism has given him a world wide rep utation, may now do his country an Inestimable sen-Ice by taking the lec ture platform for the purpose of ex posing the political corruption of the Mormon element in Idaho and Utah. Senator La Follette has given the people of the United States a price less education on the railroad rate bill fight by his series of lectures. Du bois is now confronted with the same beckoning opportunity on the Mor mon issue. SACA.TAWEA NOT FORGOTTEN. Sacajawea has not been mentioned !r the press for some time. But in the long silence she was not forgotten. The wdmen of Wyoming are now petitioning the legislature of that state to appropriate $500 for the purpose of erecting a monument over the grave of the Indian Bird Woman on the Shoshone reservation in that state. Oregon women raised $7000 to erect a statue. In her memory and Wyoming bqlng honored as her resting place, should at least provide a rugged shaft In her memory. Oregon women shrould rush In a few petitions to the session at Cheyenne, urging the ap propriation. Or, better still, Oregon women might petition the government to per mit the removal of Sacajawea's re mains from Wyoming to Portland, where they might rest In the land which saw ber life's greatest service In Its full fruition. In the railroad rate investigations iield during the past week by the In terstate commerce commission at Spokane, the newspapers of Portland hive had nothing but ridicule and sr.ai's f r the effort of the Inland empire to remedy the rate evil which has curbed the Interior for the past quarter of a century. Portland Is to blame for the termi nal rate which has robbed the con sumers of the Interior of millions of dollars In unjust and extortionate freight tariffs since the O. R. & N. ral'way was completed through Ore gon and Washington. Portland Jobbers dictated the rates which the O. R. &. X. put Into effect. and by that robber rate every effort to start wholesale and Jobbing Indus tries In eastern Oregon has been stifled. Inland empire shippers who buy In lit cast must pay freight to Portland and return to the point of destination. thus making Portland a favored point to the detriment of every point In the Interior. IX THE NEW DEAL THAT HAS BEEN" INAUGURATED IN OREGON IT WAS HOPED THAT PORTLAND WOULD ASSIST IN REMOVING THF DISCRIMINATING FREIGHT RATES WHICH HAVE THROTTLED THE INLAND EMPIRE FOR SO LONG. BUT ONCE AGAIN WE ARE DIS- AT POINTED. PORTLAND HAS NOTHING PUT RIDICULE FOR OUR EFFORTS. Pendleton, Walla Walla and Spo kane arc entitled to terminal rates. Portland and Puget sound cities have monopolized the commercial Interests of the northwest so long that they fee that they have a perpetual right to do so. They forget the growth of the coun try which has released the shipper and he consumer from their bondage. Portland should at least assist Ir. removing the abuses which she has so long tostered, and should make an effort to hold by friendship the trade and prestige which she cannot much longer hold by favoritism with rail road minagers. SENATORIAL "PREROGATIVES." Because President Roosevelt thought Senator Fulton was entangled in the land frauds with other leading politicians of Oregon, he nominated W. C. Bristol for United States dis trict attorney for Oregon without recommendation from the Oregon sen ator. Senator Fulton has taken a vow that Bristol shall not be appointed, and has carried his fight to the United States senate, where he hopes to de feat the president's wishes. The senatorial "prerogative" has been touched In a tender spot The senate committee on Judiciary promises to turn down the appoint ment of Bristol, simply because Sen ator Fulton requests it. The situation In Oregon has not entered Into the consideration made by the Judiciary committee, evidently. If the senate refuses to appoint Bristol It will only embitter the fight m mmammmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mm mam OF THROAT AND LUNG EODES DR. The basis of the article deilinj: with the subject Is found in a series of comparative tables cover In? the prices of a large variety, of commodities that enter Into daily household use.- A decrease is shown in some com modities but they are for the most part such articles as dried and can ned fruits and canned vegetables which would hardly come under the head of necessities. Wheat flour, for instance, has ad vanced 2fi per cent; graham flour. 21 per cent; corn meal, 37 per cent; rye flour, 25 per cent; rice, 40 per cent; oatmeal, 23 per cent; soda crackers, 36 per cent: coffee, 26 per cent; canned salmon, 20 per cent; cent; canned salmon, 20 per cent; beans. 12 per cent. Fresh and cured meats have also shown a marked upward tendency. Taken as a whole the labor com missioner's investigations of the sub ject sustain clearly the general belief that during the past eight years the cost ef living in Washington has in creased at least 40 per cent. The association of women opposed to the equal suffrage movement is acting In a very narrow and non-progressive way in placing obstacles in the way of those who desire equal suffrage. It Is a sort of a "dog-in-the-manger" policy, which does not wish to vote and will not let other women vote. If 100 women In the state de sire to vote, should they not be allow ed the privilege? What right has one woman to say what another shall or shall not dr., In the exercise of citizen ship? Th way should be open and then those desiring to vote might do so and those not so desiring would be at liberty to stay at home. "Only a starter" enthusiastically remarks Councilman Joseph Ell, when talking about paving In Pendleton. "We will never be able to enjoy to the fullest extent the Main and Court street paving until we pave a few blocks either way from those street Wc have only made a good start. The work of paving is still ahead of us." And the Fast Oregonlan seconds the motion. WHAT IS ARTESIAN WATER? Many persona suppose that the name artesian, as applied to a well, contains some allusion to the prin ciple on which It operates, but that Is a mistake. The name comes from Artols, In France, anciently called Arteslum, where the first well of this kind was dug. A good Illustration of how the well operates Is furnished by the water pipes In the upper stories of a hcuse. The water will rise In these pipes to the level of the reservoir from which the water comes. In some localities there are per- here and raise more formidable ob-Vous strata lying between Impervl- stacles to the prosecution of the guilty I ous beds, and the water percolates IT'S RIGHT HERE that the superiority of our blank books, stationary and office essen tials makes itself manifest, as they will to every practical bookkeeper and accountant. A company known as the Anthra cite Peat Fuel company has pur chased 62 acres . of the richest peat land situated In Orange county, two and a half miles north of Huntington Beach, and has installed an up-to-date peat fuel plant, says the Los Angeles Times. The company has been Incorporated for the purpose of manufacturing and selling In California an Improved composition peat fuel, and has ac quired the sole right to use In the state the carpenter patent, which covers the latest and most approved process, by which the ordinary peat soil Is readily and economically con verted Into a high-grade commercial fuel. This process consists of the com bining of certain inexpensive chem icals In fixed proportions with a nat ural peat soli, forming the same into convenient shape for handling and use. The process is a result of many years' application and experiments by practical men, whp have had for their object the Invention of a substitute for coal, which would be equal In heating power to the best coal, at the same time having the distinction of producing no smoke, soot, or gas, and being entirely free from clinkers and other waste material. In other words, supplying an Ideal fuel, and at a coBt less than coal or any other acceptable fuel now In general use.
