Milton, Jan. 21. The Milton-Free-
water country has been exceptionally
free from -contagious diseases this
season until the past few days, two
cases of smallpox having developed.
Clarence Hurst, a mile below the city,
is one of the victims, and Jim Hop
kins, who is employed at the electric
power plant, 10 miles above the city.
Hopkins drove to town not knowing
the nature of the disease and engaged
a room. It is believed that both
these parties contracted the disease
at Walla Walla, as there are a num
ber of cases at Walla Walla. Every
thing is being done to prevent a spread
of the disease, and the schools will
not be closed unless more cases de-
vepol. It is In a mild form.
The union evangelistic meetings
which, have been held at the M. E.
church, south, came to a close last
night The meetings were very suc
cessful and well attended.
Arrangements have been made to
hold 'a fruitgrowers convention at
Milton about February 1. Dr. James
Withycombe, of the State Agricultural
college, and other prominent fruit
growers and agriculturists of the state
will be here for this occasion. Milton
Is one of the greatest fruit districts In
the state and a good attendance Is ex
pected at this meeting.
Chinook at Milton.
After the long cold spell a chlnook
wind and warmer weather took away
nearly al the snow, though consider
able remains on the mountains sur
rounding. The young people made the
best of sleighing and skating while It
lasted.
Daughter Born.
Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Lawson
of Hudson Bay, Thursday, January
17, a baby girl.

Walter Woodard has been appoint
ed city marshal to fill the unexpired
term of Grant Williams, who recent
ly resigned.
Death of Mrs, Craig:.
Mrs. W. R. Craig, who has been 111
for some time with tuberculosis at
Ellensburg, died Saturday. She was
a former resident of this place and
has a daughter, Mrs. Cananne, living
here at this time. She also has a
daughter, Mrs. R. E. Frazler, living
at Walla Walla. The funeral will take
place at Walla Walla. ,

MAY BITLD RIVER BOATS.
Compai'y Formed to Engage In Alas
kan and Inland Empire Traffic.
A steamer, to bo built In parts In
Portland and transported to the Yu
kon river. In Alaska, will be operated
on that stream and Its tributaries by
the Alaskan Transportation, Mining
& Trading company, says the Oregon
Daily Journal. It will ultimately go
Into the steamship business between
Portland and Alaska and may extend
Its steamboat operations to the upper
Columbia apd Snake rivers.
The company was Incorporated Sat
urday at Salem, with a nominal cap
ital of $20,000. The Incorporators
are R. H. Spencer, John S. Jensen,
Frank Schlegel. I.. H. Campbell and
Captain George Walker.
Three of the men named are prac
tical steamboat men and have had ex
tended experience in the transporta
tion and trading business. Mr. Camp
bell and Captain Walker were some
years ago engaged in steamboatlng on
the Columbia and In recent years
have been In business In Alaska.

New 'Phone Company at La Grande.
The Incorporation of the Home In
dependent Telephone company has
been effected, with the capital stock
placed at 375,000. The Incorporators
are W. H. Bohnenkamp, W, J. Church,
S. D. Crowe, William Miller and J. L.
Cavlness. This Is essentially the Ver
gere 'Phone company on an expanded
basis. The new company will absorb
the old one, and the principal offi
cers and stockholders remain the
same. The Vergere company has ex
pended about 338,000 in building the
Independent system In Union and
Wallowa counties. About as much
more Is to be expended In extensions
and improvements. The principal of
fice of the company Is at La Grande.

A contract for 25,000 barrels of the
Peacock Satisfaction flour has been
received by the Peacock Milling com
pany for Immediate shipment. This
Is the largest order ever received by
the Freewater mill. The mill now has
contracts on hand for 150,000 sacks
of flour.
Broom Manufacturing Plant
J. D. Walker of Rockford, Wash.,
has rented the building formerly oc
cupied by W. W. Rice as a butcher
shop, and he has Installed a broom
manufacturing plant His broom corn

able it will be used.
