"MICK RAKE" IX LA GRANDE.
Municipality la Being Cleaned Out
Morally.
La Grande Is undergoing a munici
pal house cleaning almost as com
plete as the one carried on some time
ago In St Louis by Joe Folk, accord
ing to the statement of J. W. Knowles,
an attorney of the Union county cap
ital, who was In Portland yesterday
on his way to Salem to argue a case
before the Oregon supreme court
says the Oregon Dally Journal.
Two councllmen of La Grande are
at present under indictment for an
infringement of the county laws. The
mayor was arrested a few days ago
for violating the quarantine ordi
nances and the marshal was acquitted
yesterday of a charge of using profane
language while arresting a man for
using profane language. Every one
is happy over the marshal's vindica
tion. Otherwise La Grande is quiet.
Mr. KnowleB says the people of
Union county want the choice of the
voters ratified by the election of
Bourne, and believe that with the
latter and Fulton in the United States
senate Oregon will have as able a
representation In Washington as that
of any other state.

The Drug Store that Serves You Best
SHEEP BUYER WILL RETURN.
John Towno Will Quite the Business
for Seattle Real Estate.
John Towne, the well known sheep
buyer of Cut Bank, Mont, was In the
city for a few hours yesterday morn
ing. He was upon his way to Montana
from Seattle, where he had passed
several weeks lately.
"In our part of Montana we did not
suffer much from the storm," he said,
"because winds came up and blew the
snow Into drifts. As a result we had
no trouble feeding, and letters I have
received from my men show the losses
to be light. But in the section
around Miles City and near Glendlve
I understand the losses were terrible.
The snow was deep and crusted be
fore the big storm came on. On ac
count of the crust It was impossible
to clear the ground for feeding, even
with snow plows, and the Bheep
died."
During the winter Mr. Towne has
been speculating In Seattle real estate
and thus far has met with good suc
cess. He says it Is now his intention
to dispose of his sheep next summer
and try his fortune in Seattle, which
he believes will be the most thriving
city of the coast.
Owing to the uncertainty at this
time, Mr. Towne says he does not care
to contract sheep yet, but expects to
return to Pendleton for that purpose
In a month or six weeks.
