Oregon Capitol Building and Contents 1 Without Insurance Protection. An announcement which will be a surprise to many taxpayers of Oregon Is made by Secretary of State F. I. Dunbar, In his report to the legisla ture, upon retiring from office on De cember 31. In regard to the absence of fire Insurance on the Oregon state capitol building and contents, he says I respectfully direct your attention as the attention of nearly every pre ceding legislative assembly has been directed, by the reports of this de partment, to the fart that there is no fire Insurance covering the capitol building or its contents. No legislature has authorized the placing of Insurance on the building or contents, or made an appropriation to cover the cost of same. The build ing Is equipped with a fair water sys tem, which Is inspected from time to time, and It Is also guarded as care fully as possible by the lanltors and nlKht watchman. The approximate cost of the build ing and contents, excepting the libra- ry. Is $500,000. The library Is increas ing In value yearly. If In your Judg ment, the building should be covered by some Insurance, an appropriation should be made therefor. At East St. Louis, 111., Charles Smith broke D. F. Well Known Pendleton Farmer Will Move to Canada. Pendleton, Jan. 4. Kast Oregoninn: Since returning from southern Alberta I have been idr-ed so many questions that If you will allow me the tpace I will answer everybody at once. There are so many Oregon people up thero that It Beem like home. The land lies more nearly level, but there Is not a great difference In farming meth ods. I believe the soil Is richer and there is practically no poor land. Some farms have some surface rock, but these are easily removed. Cattle seem to do well and at the price of pork. 10 cents, It Is bound to be a good hog country. Clover and alfalfa do well, but everybody seems to be growing wheat The finest grain I ever saw or ex pect to see was at Claresholm. They tell me that the yields are often 60 bushels to the acre of wheat, both spring and fall varieties. Wheat will weigh as high as 65 rounds to the bushel, oats anywhere from 40 to 50 pounds to the bushel. The varie ties of wheat mostly grown are red winter and Odessa, but some are growing Jones fife. They don't grow much club wheat tjiough I believe they will when they try It. Any kind of grain seems to do well. The country Is level, though the foothills of the Rockies are only a few miles west. The roads are excellent and a single team can draw 80 bush els of wheat to market. The price of wheat Is about the same as here, per haps a shade under, but the market Is new yet. Land averages In price from $15 to 126. With the crops they are having It cannot long remain at the figure, and I believe It will be as high as the land here. I found the fall a little colder than Oregon, but I believe their winters are broken up by long spells of mild weather. Yours very truly, D. E. CAP.GII.L.
