The Immense cost of running the city of Portland is shown from the following estimates of next vear's ex penses taken from the Oregon Dally Journal. The Journal says of the question of taxation and city expenses: Over $1,000,000 will be turned over to the officials of Portland with which to run the city next ytar if the recom mendation of the levy of 5.7 mills is adopted by the council. The ways and means committee of the council lato yesterday afternoon decided to recommend that the levy on city property be 5.7 mills. On the valuation of property this year this levy will raise $949,050. To this must be added $391,000 which will be rais ed from license fees and ojher sour ces, and whlih goes Into the general fund. The bulk of the money will be divided among the departments for which specific levies must be made by the charter. Ihe recommenda tion will probably be adopted. Taxpayers will doubtless protest, hut the councilmen can show what Is demanded next year: an Increase In the salaries of the firemen und po licemen and the construction of gar bage crematory, which will cost ap proximately $50,000. These ure but two of the larger items. Money will also he spent for an east side police station. This has been considered a necessity for a long time. It Is also confidentially hoped that provisions will be made for an emerg ency hospital. It Is declared that no other city of Portland's size in the United States requires its police force to take injured persons to the police station in the patrol wagon. For the expenses cf the city In IjQ'., $1,009,227 was raised by texa- tion. This was by a levy of 5. J mills o na valuation of $131,000,000. As the valuation this year is $165,500,000, it will he seen that the council is planning a higher levy on an Increas ed valuation. This will amount to $2i:fi.SJ3 more than Portland has ever raised for Its expenses before. Assessor Slgler has declared that a levy of 5 mills upon his Increased val uation Is all that is necessary. He told the ways and means committee yesterday that nny higher levy was unnecessary, but his suggestions did not find favor. If the council adopts this levy the total will be 16.2 mills. This will be divided as follows: County tax, In cluding road. tax, 3.275 mills; city tax, 5.7 nulls; state tax. 2 mills; school district No. 1, 2.5 mills; Port of Port land tax, .8 mill; state school tax, 1.8 nulls; library tax, .125 mills. The receipts will be divided among the departments as follows, according to ih- levy recommended yesterday: Fire d'-paitmenl. $174. 62f.; police. $1.8. 9S7; library, $20,Sli.50; street repair. $40,950; light, $S2,250; parks, $49,950; interest on bonds, $108,225; t ridges, $s3,250. sw RED I EE P 'ft CTIO MS on all Women's Ready -to-Weal- Garments, Furs, Cloaks, Swits, and '' 'Skirts.
