central body, have decided that the
time Is rl c In America for a vigorous
propaganda' which shall endeavor to
unit" the forces of discontent under
the red banner. Not to fight but to
vote, for socialism recognizes that the
ballot is Its one effective weapon.
The parliamentary work was begun
some little time ago. The socialism
conference In Newark, N. J., last
March, which resulted in the union
of Hie socialist parly and the socialist
labor party, was due to the efforts of
the HiUKHels bureau.
Ktnll Vandervlde, Delglan secretary
of the International committee, says
of thii movement:

Reword Breaking Explosion.
Frank ' Farrell, W. H. Young and
Calvin Ross narrowly escaped death
yesterday at ' the Welgle camp of
Elk creek.
The receiver of the air compressor
plant exploded. Mr. Toung was not
over six feet from It and the other
men about 10 feet. Pieces of the
receiver flew In all directions, but
none of the men received more than
a few slight scratches, except Far
rell. The knuckle of the Index finger
of his right hand was cut to the
bone. Mr. Toung was struck be
tween tho shoulders by a long piece
of Iron pipe, but was not hurt. One
pleco of the receiver, weighing about
76 pounds, went through the Iron
roof, cutting a lorge piece of timber
half In two. 'The windows were all
smashed and oi" end of the building
partly demollsliu 1. A piece of Iron
whizzed through the hat of one of
the men but entirely missed his head.
A box containing 100 pounds of giant
powder, about eight feet from the
receiver, luckily was not struck by
any of tho flying pieces, but a keg of
nails nearby was scattered in all di
rections. The men at work In the
fnce of the 600-foot tunnel, hearing
the nolso of the explosion, rushed
out, expecting to find two or three
dead men. Mr. Wclglo will get a re
ceiver from the Thorne camp, and
expects to be at work again In about
two weeks. Idaho City World.
Protect Proprietary Medicine.
Did it ever occur to you that pro
prietary medicines are a blessing to
mankind generally? The good ons
have long continued sale; the poor
ones have short life and soon leave
the market.
It we had to uepen-i entirely upon
physicians and druggists It would be
expensive and very inconvenient at
times, especially in the country and
at night when neither could be con
veniently reached. For nearly 40
years Boschee's German Syrup has
been used in many ramllles and
thousands of lives have been sa I
by Its use, when it was impossible to
reach a physician. German Syrup is
the best household remedy for coughs,
colds, throat and lung trouble.- It
quickly relieves the hacking . cough,
loosens the phlegm, and brings sound
and refreshing sleep. Twenty-flv

Douglas? Couiily Crop Amounted to
1125,000 Tills Year.
Prune shipments from Douglas
county are now practically closed for
the season, and the output for the
1906 crop approximates 126 carloads
of evuporated prunes, or about 6,
000,000 pounds, says the Itoseburg
Review.
From these the growers have
realized (or should do so) upwards
of $126,000. Of these the Umpo.ua
Valley Prune association handled
something more than one-fourth, or
upwards of 1,260,000 pounds. The
Douglns County Fruit Packing com
pany, under direction of C. Gazley,
handled nearly 1,600,000 pounds. The
remainder were Bhlpped by W. N.
Moore of Ruckles, E. C. Ward of
Newberg and Lasallo Bros., of Al
bany. The Willamette Valley Prune asso
ciation of fialem, with Its four asso
ciated packing houses, Including the
Uumpqua valley plant of Roseburg.

The Seattle Chamber of Commerce
will at the regular meeting tomorrow
take the necessary steps towards
having the government construct at
the Bremerton nnvy yard a naval
hospital to cost $1,260,000, says the
Seattle News. The subject will be
presented by Judge Burke In an
elaborate statement.
Every senator and representative
from this state Is to be asked to en

the government In every way possi
ble. The matter has been taken up at
this time because of the recommen

and because the government recog

best places In the country for the re
cuperation of the men of tho navy.
A site for the hospltaj Is already In
view consisting of 20 to 30 acres of
nnvy yard land. The hospital will be
