Ed Maurer, Prop, West Webb street Among the Exchanges of the Inland Empire llallrniul Fight at Yaklnia. Engineer F. L. Pitman, of the North Coast road on the witness stand today, in condemnation proceedings of thnt company against the Northern Pacific for a right of way across the land south of the lower end of Selah Btreet, said thnt It would coHt about J7r.,000 to mnkc a change In Its plans of en tering the city as suggested by the Northern Pacific officials attending the case. , The main contention of the North rn Pacific in fighting the entrance of the North Coast Into the city Is that the latter road seeks to take ground that It wants for purposes of Improve ments. The North Coast alms to reach the warehouse district. To do so It must enter Selah street at the foot. It Is necessary to cross over the 20-acre tract of the Northern Pacific otherwise a direct line could not be nvilntnlnpd from Union gnp parallel with the N. P. to this city. Throwing the North Const to VVe nns nvenuo would take It out of the wnrohoupe district two blocks farther to the west. This would place the control of a large part of the business in the hands of the N. P. and this Is what the North Const wants bust ticss. Another Important statement mnde by witnesses In the ense Monday nftor noon was that the Northern "Pacific would fight and prevent, If possible, the building of any road Into the Ynklmn vnlloy. which It claims ns Its own. Mr. Pitman, E. M. Denn and C. E. Woods testified that about two years ago Third Vice President 1-evy of the' N. P., said thnt the Yakima valley was the N. .P.'s territory and thnt his company would oppose the building of any other road Into It. He also said, they testified, thnt the N. P. would not make traffic ar rangements with any Independent rond and If another road was built the N. P. would build It. Mr. Pear, said that Mr. levy said that If an In dependent line was ever built here "It would have to beat the N. P. to It." Yakima Republic. lfopfi o End Fuel Famine. Four carloads of coal arrived In the city for the fuel companies yesterday and it Ib expected that two or three carlonds will arrive today, snya the Lewlston Tribune. Lewlston has been particularly fortunnte in being able to secure ,coal enough to prevent any suffering, although the scant supply has caused the cltleens to confine themselves to burning Just what Is necessary for comfort. General Agent Jordan of the Northern Pacific, says thnt the fuel situation Is much more hopeful than It was 10 days ago. The DENTISTS. RALPH C. SWINBURNE, DENTIST. Monday evening the steamer Spen cer, which since September 20 has been making regular trips to the portage road, carrying freight, brought the lust load down for the season, and hereafter will remain at The Dalles dock each evening Instead of braving the waters of the eddy. On her last trip she brought down 2200 sacks of wheat, which clears the warehouse at the portage. During the three months it is estimated that the Spencer has brought down be tween 55,000 and 60.000 Backs, be side other freight Next year It Is likely the Open River association will have its own boat on the run. Last night 500 barrels of cement were taken up to Smith & Jones, the government contractors, and the port age expects to carry 7000 barrels for north bank contractors before the first of the year. Superintendent Steelsmlth expects that business for the portage will bv the first of the year, have been all hnndled an dthe road will be closed down for the season. The Dnlles Chronicle. find Roads In Raker County. Driving in from Maiden Gulch near Newl rldge, tho other dav, a rancher, whose name Is withheld for obvious reasons, had his wagon and team stuck In the mud for hours and nar rowly escaped a breakdown, although his vehicle only carried a load of five chickens In a coop. "The roads In our part of the coun try are In a fearful condition. The bridges and culverts are dangerous. No work has been done on them and I can tell you what is the principal trouble with the roadbeds In the gulches. "There Is no drainage anywhere along those roads and the water and melting snow fro mthc hillside wash over the roads cutting them all to pieces. With proper drnlnage we would have the best roads In the county, because the soli Is good and would stand up If kept dry. The dralnige question Is a simple one and the fixing of bridges and culverts only requites the expenditure of a little tlmbe rand muscle." Raker City Democrat. Succeeds Al Knight.
