Freewater. Dec. 18. At the annual
meeting of the Freewater fire brigade
the following officers were elected for
the ontuiiig year: Chief, W. J. Best:
assistant chief, John Crimcns- chief
engineer, Chester Schafer; assistant
engineer. Ransom Schaffer. It wag
decided also to have a concert by local
talent, and basket social to raise means
wherel'y the equipment of the brigade
may be bettered.
The Hudson Bay grange, which was
recently organized, elected C. E. F.ur
Unganie, r. J. Kirk and P.. H. Well
man to commence proceedings in re
gard to a hall and also to incorporate
themselves for the purpose of putting
the grange on a business basis. Over
J1000 has already been raised towards
the erectim of the hall, and 12 new
members have been added to the list,
making a total membership of nearly
160.
Jim Law-ler has sold his house and
lots back of the postoffice to Sears and

The Walla Walla Traction company
has moved its camps a little below
town and are now working near thl

ings at the Christian church are still
on, and over 40 new members have
been added to the church. Rev.
Stephens, who is conducting the serv
ices, accompanied by his wife, will
sail from San Francisco January 17,
for New Zealand, where they will
spend a year in revival work. They
will also visit the Holy Land and other
far eastern countries.

Ernest McQueen recently purchased
50 hed of cattle from R. B. Vanelll,

parts, and everyone is expecting a
mrry Christmas.
The music class of Columbia col
lege held a bazaar in Planfs building
Saturday afternoon and evening, re
freshments being served, the proceeds
of which will be used for the estab
lishing of a library of works on music
for the members of the music class.
School Contribute.
The Milton and Freewater public
schools have taken up a collection for
the Boys' and Girls' Aid society of
Portland, consisting of the following:
Six boxes of canned and dried fruits,
250 pounds of flour, four sacks of
farina, two sacks apples, one sack
apples and mixed vegetables, nine
sacks potatoes, four sacks squash, one
sack cabbage and about $5 In money.

Traffic on the Columbia River Is Rap!

Umatilla, Dec. 19. The transfer of
passengers from the main Una of the
O. R. & N. to the Washington division
amounts to about 50 per day. Most of
this travel is made up of homeseekers
for eastern Washington.
The upper Columbia steamers nre
full of business, taking supplies to
the various camps In contemplation
of the f"ete-up.
The Norma has Just returned from
Celllo, where she went to take on a
load of cement, after distributing a
load of supplies.
The Yakima is proving an Immense
success as a low water freighter. She
has' Just come from Pasco with 100
tons of freight over Homily rapids.

The graders are making rapid
progress and it Is estimated that two-
thirds of the grade Is completed be
tween Konnewick and Umatilla. It Is
understood that track-laying will begin
at Kennewick January 1. The 700-foot
tunnel at Expansion, opposite Umatil
la Junction, is a slow proposition,
Work has been In progress there since
February' and it will be three months
yet before it is completed.
The river still remains at a good
boating stage, falling very slowlv,
Snake river rose a foot yesterday and
is very muddy, indicating heavy rains
on the Clearwater.
There has been but very little cold
weather so far, but old-timers are
looking for a cold winter. Immense
flocks of geese frequent the river, in
in numbers far beyond anything ever
seen within the memory of the oldest
residents.
