TWENTY-FOUR PAGES. F.A8T OHEGONIAN SrECIAlj HOLIDAY EDITION, PACE TWENTY-THREE. MANUFACTURING AND COMMERCE The original Oregon, often referred lo as the- Oregon country, Includes the st'ite" of Oregon, Washington, Idaho uii'l it pcrtliin of Montana and Wyom ing; In fac t, the entire Culun.hla river b-irin, except a small fraction lying In British possessions, unil covers an nrea of 2JD,000 square miles. In size It Is about equal to the 13 original "filter. In variety of resources It far outrank them. However, It han been remote from the commercial renter of the world, in consequence of which Its develop nent has been slow nnd accompanied by many hardships. At first It was necessary to bring from the Atlantic seaboard all necessaries of life, but soon the principal products were ralfed here. Then came many years In which all manufactured articles were brought from the east. Very humbly manu facturing began, but It rapidly In creased In volume, until now the cap ital Invested In Portland a'one amounts tn $32,000,000: there are lilt, 000 wage-earners, and the product amounts to $49,437,000. This. too. Until recent years It has been Impos sible to transmit power by wire, with out serious loss. Finally this haa be come a simple matter, and power Is now transmitted long distances, with a less so slight as not to be worth considering. Such being the case, it Is only a matter of time when the water pow er of our mountains will be careful ly conserved and used to replace steam, on railroads, In machine shop, woolen mills, printing offlceB, glass works, and In every form of manufacturing and ti ansporiatlon. It Is Impossible to comprehend the vast significance of this fact lo the Pacific (Invest. Already the work oi developing has commenced, but very few of those engaged In It have any conception of Its dazzling possibilities, and when suggested they are considered wild and visionary. There Is no argument In such expressions of douht. but they arc worthy of sufficient consideration to warrant a statement of facts. Nnturil conditions are such that the Oregon country will oecome one of vast manufacturing legion business er, richer and greater to the squure mile than Pennsylvania; but besides this. Its agriculture, its mines. Its forests and Its rivers will excel the choicest regions of the east. The waters of our mountains will be used for power and for light, then will flow Into the lowlands to be carefully conserved, carried off In canals, nnd ASKING ABOUT OREGON. About 500 Letter Pouring Into Port land a Day. The Portland Commercial club Is receiving about 500 letters a day In quiring about Oregon resources and opportunities, says the Oregon Dally Journal. The larger part of the let ters are from farmers In the middle west, who have been moved by one Influence or another to consider changing their residence to the Pa cific northwest. All sorts of questions are asked concerning the country. Its products, soil, climate and people. There are letters In half a dozen languages, but most of them are from Americans, Germans, Swedes and Poles. The In quiries are being distributed among the 63 organizations forming the Oregon Development league, and the vnrlous members of that league are getting what they ask for immigra tion Inquiries. The letters received are answered, giving the Information desired about each section of the state where the Becker for information may find conditions suitable to his needs. The man who wants to raise Ango ra goats or wool Is told where he can find conditions right for that indus try. The fruitgrower, the agricultur ist, the mill man and the manufac turer are given special attention.
