In a town of but 7000 people, this Is considered a remarka ble business showing. Over 100 far mers In the county harvest 10,000 bushels of wheat and over, many of them harvesting as much as 30.000 1 and 40.000 bushels. This income! a magnificent volume of business. Several thousand dollars are brought to the city each year by Pen dleton's excellent hospital. Large sums are expended here by families moving Into the city for school pur poses. Freighters, teamsters and stockmen from the Interior counties of the state bring thousands of dol lars here In the course of each year. Sheep, horse and cattle buyers from distant states spend large sums In the city during each year and a good In come Is enjoyed from the transient travel passing through the city, trans ferring from the main lln of the O. n. & X. to the Spokane branch, and vice versa. Pendleton woolen mills and scouring mills expend large sums In wool purchases and salaries, and a number of traveling salesmen for large wholesale houses mane the city their headquarters, and have their homes here. These and other agen cies go to make up the great volume of business enjoyed by Pendleton. Many Fine nullillngs. There are 40 large buildings in the main part of the city of Pendleton, with perhaps as many more smaller buildings. In these 40 main buildings are located 80 business Institutions, which with the smaller Institutions In the outer parts of the city bring the total number of business firms to over 100. In the office buildings of the city up exceptionally large institutions. They have thus been Identified with every phase of the city's growth, and to their progressive methods, their public spirit and Indomitable energy Is the present prosperous and growing condition of the city due. Good Honda ami Streets. The county court of Umatilla coun ty In conjunction with the Oood Roads bureau of the United States govern ment, has Just completed a section of scientific madacam road on one of the main traveled country roads lead ing Into Pendleton. This Is the sec ond section of such road to be built In Oregon, the first section having been built in Marlon county during the present year. The county also ovn a 12-ton roller which is employed constantly on the roads and for a mountain country Umntilla county has excellent roads leading in all directions through the settled portions. The street paving movement which has been started in the city promises to continue Indefinitely and there Is every prospect of securing paved and macadamized streets throughtout the entire city within a reasonable time. A Convention City. Owing to its excellent railroad fa cilities Pendleton has become a con vention city of great importance In eastern Oregon and the inland em pire. Within the past year 10 con- finds its way into Pendleton business channels. The Income from the Umatilla Indian reservation is about $200,000 annually, most of which Is pent In Pendleton. The Income from J. 000.000 pounds of wool produced In the county Is over $500,000. This Is directly tributary to Pendleton. The proceeds from the sale of 3. 000. 000 bushels of wheat, the amount sold annually by Umatilla county farmers, la $1,800,000. This Is dlveded among the towns of the county with Pendle ton far In the lead with wheat depos its. Over 100.000 head of sheep were old out of the county this year, the ' proceeds of these sales amounting to about $300,000. This Is a direct con-! trlbutlon to Pendleton channels of, trade. One thousand cars of flour are sent out of Pendleton annually, j This enormous Income Is distributed again in the county. In wheat pur- chases, wages and maintenance of the : flouring mill Industry. Eight thous-' and head of cattle, valued at $220,000, are sold out of the couiity each year, this money finding Its way into the mercantile business and banks of Pendleton, largely. The railroads pay cut In salaries and expenses in Pen-, dletjon over $50,900 annually, this' mount going directly Into the chan- nels of trade of the city. Four nun-; dred laboring men and women draw ing salaries amoui.tlng to over $300, 000 annually, are employed In Pen dleton. A large part of this enorm-' oas amount finds Its way Into the bus iness volume of the city. Sharp's paint store. ventlons of northwest associations, lodges, churches and societies have been held In the city and the Com mercial association has made a spe cial effort to further this feature of the city by appointing a convention committee to look after the Interests of Pendleton in this line. All the best theatrical companies which come to the northwest are seen In Pendleton, and some of the best lecturers, evangelists and organizers of different lines of thought which come to the west are to be heard here, giving the city a metropolitan atmosphere which Is enjoyed by but few points outside of the large coast cities. Ten passenger trains pass through the city every 24 hours, making It a railroad center of excellent facilities, and offering the best possible advan tages to the traveling public. A Model Home C!ty. Taking every feature of Pendleton Into consideration It offers exceptional advantages to every ciass of home seekers. Salaries and wages are good, ranging from $75 to $150 per month for men In responsible positions; common labor from $2.50 to $3, and skilled labor all the way from $3 to $7 per day, according to the line of work and the ability nf the workman. Many laboring men ot very small means have secured locations and built their homes In the building and loan associations of the city, which offer every Inducement for this plan. In this way the man without means may build him a home and live In It and enjoy It while paying for It. Rents are reasonable and large numbers of modern houses supplied with city water, electric light, tele phone and other conveniences are to be had. There Is free mall delivery to every part of the city. All Modern Conveniences. The city Is supplied with water from an excellent system of municipal wa ter works, costing $50,000, and hav ing several miles of water mains per meating every part of the city. A modern sewer system was Installed In 1904 at a cost of $50,000. This Is sufficient for a city of 2,000 popula tion and gives every sanitary advan tage enjoyed In the larger cities of the coast. Over 700 telephones are In use In the city, the express or most modern system of telephones being In use. Electric light and power Is supplied from a central power station on the Little Walla Walla river near Milton. Light and power prices are very reasonable and the amount of elec tricity which the city may receive 'rom this source Is unlimited, as the ower plant Is one of the largest on .he Pacific coast. A gas plant Is now In course of construction In Pendleton nnd this will add greatly to the lighting and heating facilities of the city also. A first-class messenger system Is main tained by the Western Union, which maintains city offices separate from the railroad offices, and all the busi ness lines In the city operate deliveries to every part of the city.
