The latest review of the plans of Harrlman In Oregon Is given by the Oregon Sunday Journal of yesterday. While there Is nothing new In the re view, yet this latest statement brings out some Interesting features of the progress of the Hnrrlman plans In the state. The Journal says: In odvance of the construction of the Southern Pacific railroad through central Oregon to Huntington, the Hnrrlman companies will build a railroad from Huntington to Lewis- ton, following the course of the Snake river. Operations by the Northwest ern and the Northern Pacific In that territory have alarmed the Union Pa cific Interests and they have deter mined to take no chances of losing the only water grade from Wyoming to the Columbia river. It Is said, construction of the Snake river line will be commenced within the next 00 days. Preparations will be made during the winter and dirt will fly on the grade early next spring. The surveys have been made, and careful examinations completed by traffic and engineering experts. Final grade stakes are being driven and the surveys are being placed on file as fast as they can be prepared. The work will be done under direc tion of the Oregon Short Line. A few months ago this company began extension of the Union Pacific syBtem via Vale, through central Oregon. The road has been completed to Vale and turned over to the Harrlman offi cials. It was the Intention to push construction from the Klamath ex tension eastward, and from Vale westward, until a trunk line had been completed, through the state from east to west The Klamnth extension will be carried on with all possible speed be tween Klamath lakes and Nation, but work on the line through central Or egon will. It Is repoted from official Short Line sources, be held In abey ance until the Snake river line Is well under way or completed. With the present condition of the labor market there Is a well defined limit to the amount of railroad construction work that can be advantageously carried on in the Pacific northwest. All over the coast laborers are scarce and hard to keen. The result of construction of the Oregon Short Line through the Snake river valley to Lewiston will be to give the Union Pacific system possession of the only continuous chain of water grades from Portland to the country east of the Cascade and Bitter Root ranges. It will give transportation facilities to extensive copper deposits In the Seven Devils country In Idaho. Its effect on Lewiston will be to greatly stimulate the commercial prospects of that region, and to some extent re compense It for the Milwaukee's aban donment of the Clearwater basin. Wood Expensive and "Prospect of Be ing Mors So. With the last of the "black dia monds" sold last night and no cars yet In sight, the coal situation here has taken a serious turn, says the Lewiston Tribune. All of the fuel dealers are out and unless relief soon comes the steam plant of the electric light company will have to close down. The gas plant Is being crowded pretty close for fuel and has only enough on hand to run a few dnys longer. There will be no suf fering from cold for there Is consid erable wood on hand. Mountain wood cutters have Increased the price per. cord, the price having advanced SO cents In a week. . One dealer last night stated that he expected to see wood sell at $10 a cord before the new year. This will have touched the record of It years ago, that season when wood was so scarce. Six years ago wood sold at $9 per cord and the price today Is a most unusual one. Not all of the local dealers blame the railroads for the condition. Some of them have had their orders In since August. Some of the mines raised the wholesale price of coal without notice to the dealers and without regard to orders placed upon early quotations. Strikes, also, were responsible for a port of the delay. Now thnt there Is such a big demand at the different mines all of the peo ple clamoring for coal can not be ac commodated. There Is little likelihood, so deal ers state, of any change being mnde In the price of coal, different grades of which will sell from $8. B0 to $9 per ton. The reduced tariff on the Northern Pacific will not make any change In the price of coal, according to the dealers. All of the dealers In the city agree thnt within 10 dnys there will be plenty of coal to supply the demand. Manifests of coal shipped by different mines have been received and It Is believed that the cars will show up In a day or two. The electrlo light plant and the gas plant coal Is supplied directly from the mines. J. J. Jennings, manager H IN PLANS of the light company, stated last eve ning that the plant had been receiv ing one or two carloads a day from Canada, but that the recent washouts and the caving In of the tunnel had apparently stopped the quick delivery. It takes plenty -tons of coal a day to feed the light plant furnace. At the gus plant five tons are used each day. Theater "The Vniplre," Mitrcli 15. "Tim Yankee Consul" Dec. 15,. "The Yankee Consul," which comes to the Frazer on Saturday evening, December IB, is one of the best comic operas on the road. It carries about 10 people and presents a sprightly performance. A well known critic of the dramatic art, saysv There Is no species f the drama which Is more worthy .lie attention and support of a cultivated mind than comic opera of the right sort. Tet, every time that the serious drama has met with failure, the cry has gone up that a depraved public taste has pre ferred light or comic opera instead. There is truth and there Is untruth In the statement that the public has nearly always preferred opera to tragedy. That the reason for this preference lies In a vitiated public taste, is unworthy of a sensible man's attention, From the time of Shakes peare, the "good old times" as they were called, to the present, the thea tergoing public has not supported representations of the more exalted drama except when presented by great artists of great dramatic abili ties, who were able to properly por tray classic characters. "Out In Idaho," December 13. "Out In Idaho," the most successful melo-diama of the season, has been secured to play nt the Frazer opera house for the night of Thursday, De cember 13. "Out In Idaho" Is an adaption of Biette Harte's famous western stories, and Is an attraction that has been meeting with the high est praise In nil the largest cities of the United States and Canada.
