At 3:30 thin afternoon a snitch en gine brought to this city from Mcach am Conductor Charles Stacy, Ticket Agent P. Rogers, of Meaeham, and a stronger workman named Jim Key, all three suffering terribly from burns Inflicted by the explosion of a can of powder. Stacy and the ticket agent, Mr. Rog ers, nnd a workman from the con struction crew at Mencham. were un loading cans of powder from a box car to the depot platform. In setting one of them to the platform, It ex ploded. The consequence, while not fatul to cither of the three men, was that all were burned In a frightful manner. They rolled themselves In the snow to. extinguish the fire which had been Ignited In their clothes. The engineer) and assistants loaded them into the engine and brought them, to this' city, where Dr. Bacon drerred the wounds. . The skin was ac tually burned off their hands, their faces were black as coal, some of course which was only smoke and wnsh.d off. The finger nails were blown off Mr. Stacy's hands. The agent Is perhaps burned the most se riously, the workman .being least hurt of any. - Ot 4 o'clock all were having their wounds washed and dressed, but the pains ore still very severe. No exact details could be secured at the lute hour, but It Is evident that something other than the powder was in the can, as the Jar was not .suffic ient to explode: the powder. La Grande Observer. Stimulated by the heavy fall of snow throughout the Big Bend, Palouse, Walla Walla and Coeur d'Alene coun ties Inst night, local coal dealers were today flooded with frantic , appeals from Lewlston, Colfnx, Davenport, Pnl'man, Wallace and other cities for coal. In response to this demand six wholesale coal dealers, who supply the entire territory affected. Issued a signed statement declaring they had coal here In sufficient quantity to supply the entire inland empire, but that the O. R. A N. and Northern Pa cific railways refused or were unable to furnish cars with which to deliver the coal. They criticized the railways for plnclng them In a false light by advertising reduced rates on fuel and announced their Intention of appeal ing to the rnllway commission for an Investigation. Deck Smith, deputy warden at the etnte penitentiary, was In the city sev eral days last week, and while here he purchased about 300 cords of wood for the penitentiary at a price figured out at about $7 a cord on board the cars here. This price laid down in Walla Walls was about 1 8a cord. Warden Klncald says that the cars were not so heavily loaded on arrival at Walla Walla. The lack of fuel before the arrival of this wood was working quite a hardship upon the convicts and the management. A big kiln of brick, teady for fuel, had been built up. and until this wood arrived It was proba ble It would not have been burned un til spring, even If It would have been possible then.
