State Insurance Commissioner Folk of Tennessee, claims to have evidence that agents of the Mutual Life Insurance company and the New Tork Life, used the machinery and funds of both companies In the inter ests of the roJkblican state ticket during the recWt campaign. , The Atlas 'distillery at Peoria, 111., will soon begin the manufacture, of Denatured alcohol at Its capacity of 1000 barrels a day. It Is said to have orders ahead that will absorb its product for several months. The At las Is now a Standard OH , property, having been absorbed last summer. Citizens of Atlanta and Latham, Cowley county, Kansas, confiscated two carloads of St L. & S. F. coal at each town. The coal was Intended for company use and was consigned to points In Oklahoma. The citizens expect to pay for the coal, but were unable to get any without taking these extreme measures. Pine and spruce lumber has been advanced at San Francisco tl per 1000, and redwood from JZ to 15 per 1000 feet, by the dealers. It is said that Ihe demand from the east Is not responsible for the higher prices, as transportation facilities are such that there la no' Immediate prospect of the railroads supplying the demand for cars. New Band Leader. C C. Sharp of this city, has Just been selected, as leader and Instructor of the Pilot Rock band In place, of C. W. McLyman, who has resigned that position. The clerk of the Union county board of health has notified the state board of health that there Is one smallpox case at North Powder. Reports of other cases are being Investigated. Williams, of .Tacoma, and associates, have acquired title to 100 acres of land in Esuulmalt Har bor, Vancouver Island, and will there plant one of the largest oyster beds on the entire Pacific coast For the first time In 20 years the big Treadwell mines In Alaska are closed. Douglas and Juneau are suffering from a coal famine, and lack of fuel has caused the close down of the mines. No relief is In sight, and the mines will not open for an Indefinite period. City Engineer Fuller, of Tacoma, has been ousted by a squad of police under orders of Mayor Wright, who accuses Fuller, among other derelic tions of duty, of padding the estimates for the new water system over half a million dollars with the intention of grafting when contracts are let. Andrew Edwards, a negro, served a term In the Oregon penitentiary for carving a man c.t The Dalles. The day after hit was released he attempt ed to carve a Salem bartender and will prjbnbly serve another term. In prison he had several serious affrays In which he was always the aggressor. It Is probable that he Is insane, with a homicidal mania. A wreck took place four miles west of Garfield, Wash., In which Engineers Thomas Brland and Thomas Rick art were killed, both of the Northern Pacific. A m'splaced switch turned Engineer Priand's train onto a side track where Rlckart was holding a light engine. Both engines were ruined. No one but the engineers was hurt. Fears entertained for the safety of his brother by Mike Hnff were re lieved at 10:36 o'clock last night when a message arrived from Clifton, Ari zona, notifying him that the Hnff family there worn physlcnlly sound, but were without a home. From the message sent Mr. Hoff by his brother William, it Is gathered that thq former Baker people were In the midst of the flood which swept the town of Cllflon. Their home was swept entirely awny by the waters and It was by rare good fortune that they escnppd with their lives, the building being a total wreck.
