A WARNING To the People of Pendleton. "Sudden changes in the weather cannot help but result In coughs, bronchial troubles, the grippe and other slrknesses. This weather Is also bad for old people and those who are run down or have a tendency to any weakness or disease." Bald a member of the Pendleton Drug company: "It seems to me that every man, woman and child In Pen dleton, especially the aged and run down, should be warned through the columns of your paper to build thm selves up and take proper precautions to ward off sickness at this season, and there would be very much less suffering and fewer deaths tn Pendle ton." When asked what was considered the most universally successful medi cine they had ever sold for that pur pose, without hesitation the druggist answered, "Our modern cod liver preparation, Vlnol. Tou know It le not a patent medicine, and. it does not 'contain any Useless oil to clog the system and upset the stomach, but It does contain every one of the medic inal, curative and body-bulldlng ele ments of cod liver oil actually taken from fresh cods' livers, with tonic Iron added." In charge of the Salt Lake office of the bureau of an' mal Industry of the United States de partment of agriculture, has issued a not of warning to all L'tah sheepmen who contemplated wintering of herds In Nevada. He states that especially In north eastern Nevada the reports of Inspec tors show that there Is an alarming prevalence of scabies among the sheep. In Elko county more than 75 per cent of the sheep are Infected and a heavy percentage of the infection exists throughout the state. A para graph of the letter reads: "The sheep In l'tah and Idaho at the presc-nt time are In a most satis factory condition, as regards the prev alence of scabies, there being almost none- in either state; therefore, , In Conformity with the regulations of the secretary of agriculture for the protection o( the sheep owners In gen f rM. and lo the end that the work nlr'-adyaccompllshedshall not have hrpn In vain. Will Lnxt Indefinitely I'nless the Peo ple Confiscate Coal. There was not a lump of coal In the yards this morning except what was being held here by the N. P. for use on its yard engines, says the Yakima Republic' Early In the day a large crowd tf people with teams had col lected In front of the office of the Northwestern Improvement company In anticipation of the train load of coal that was promised by the North ern Pacific. No coal was brought In on Thursday and up to 11 o'clock to day none had arrived. The people In line at the coal office had been standing there since early morning. They had a large fire kin dled to keep them warm. People who were lucky enough, to secure the serv ices, of a drayman to wait In line would probably get coal some time. When the draymen go Into the line they never know when .they will get away. This Is the reason they have to charge more some times than at Other timet (or hauling coal. A dray man often ' has to wait a half day. He charges for his time. The farmer who comes to town has his time to himself and he probably can wait. There has been a big raise In the price of coal since last September. The coal companies are now charg ing 14.76 per ton In the yard here. Before September first the charge was 14.25 delivered to the consumer. As It cost 50 cents a load to the com panies to deliver to the consumer the price received by the company then was 13.75. This makes a rise of $1 per ton In the price since. September 1. The people, however, are not kick ing against the arbitrary advance made by the company. They are will ing, some of them, to pay (6, $7 and 18 If they only can get the fuel. It is now a question of facing a famine this winter or confiscating the coal as It passes through here. With the Cascade mill shutting down the fuel from that source will be cut off. This throws the people at the mercy or the coal companies. They cannot get fuel now and conditions will con tinue to grow worse. The railway has been unable to carry coal away from the mines fast enough to sup ply the people. There has been a shortage all summer. No coal Is being carried by theN. P. from the west side of the moun tains. All efforts are made to bring what Is mined from the lloslyn field. There Is very little of any other kind of freight moving at present' on ac count of the floods damaging the tracks. With traffic piling up at every point In the northwest the Indica tions are that the N. P. will have such a congestion of traffic during the next few months that business will be paralyzed. . Nampa Foundry Burns. Fire starting from a stove in the office of the Nam pa Foundry and Ma chine company, shortly after o'clock last night, destroyed the en tire plant of that company and caus ing a Iocs of upwards of $35,000, on which there was but IS000 Insurance The fire was discovered at 6:60 In the evening while all the workmen were at supper, and owing to lack of water and fire fighting facilities the flames ate their way unhindered to all parts of the plant The main building was a three-story brick, 50x100 feet, with an annex' for the foundry, 50x70. All machinery tools, patterns, together with all the books and accounts of the company were destroyed. The stock of pat terns on hand was large and valued at ?5000 alone. Three pattern makers employed by the concern lost all their tools, valued at over $600. The plant, while a smafl one, wns unusually complete, and of late has been working about 25 men. It was a ! great convenience to contractors on! the government project, as repairs could be made or new parts secured in a few hours, thus avoiding serious delay Nampa Record. M. SHUTT HEPPNER, OREGON 1 CURE YOURSELF AT HOME . Most persons who are afflicted with Contagious Blood Poison hesitate to go to a physician for several reasons. In the first place the expense is heavy, and they know that the inevitable treatment will be mercury and potash, strong minerals that act with disastrous effects on the delicate parts of the system, and which do not, after all, really cure the disease. What they want is a safe, reliable treatment that can be taken at home and a per fect cure made of this loathsome disorder without unnecessary exposure or expense. Such a remedy is S. S. S. it is the only medicine that goes down to the very bottom of the trouble and drives out the last trace of the poison so that there are never any signs of its return. Itdoes not contain a particle of mineral in any form, and after removing the disease from the circulation builds up every part of the system by Its fine vegetable tonic properties. PURELY VEGETABLE we have prepared a special book on Contagious Blood Poison which contains instructions of great value to all blood poison sufferers. We will be glad to send a copy of this book free, and if additional instructions or advice is wanted, our physicians will furnish it without charge. THE SWIFT SPECIFIC CO., ATLANTA. CA. THE COST OF KEEPING THE PRESIDENT It Is difficult to determine prectsoly what it costs his "fellow citizens" to keep the president of the United States, but it Is safe to say that It does not figure up more than two-fifths of a cent for each person in the country, man, woman and child, says the Washington Star. Compared with the cost of maintaining the head rulers of many imperialistic nations the ex pense attached to keeping the chief executive of this country Is small. The royal families of England, Germany and Russia spend millions of dollars of government revenues every year and besides have set aside for their use large domains of lands' and costly buildings. Among the presidents of republics the one who costs his countrymen the most per capita Is the president of Haiti. Citizens of that nation pay 17-22 of a cent each for the mainte nance of their ruler, while the fellow citizens of the president of Paraguay pay three-fourths of a cent each for keeping him. The cost of the presi dent of the Argentine republic seven twentieths of a cent a head; that of the president of Mexico three-twentieths of a cent a head; that of the pres ident of Chile three-tenths of a cent a head; that of the president of Bolivia one-fourth of a cent a head, and that of the president of Ecuador two-fifths of a cent a head.
