Nearly Rn.nn Agents Will Now Find Themselves Out of Work Method of Railroads In Colonizing the States In the 'ef , Purllcularly . Oregon mill Washington, Must He Revolu tionized Railroads Will Ilnvo to Advertise More Extensively. The Interstate commerce commis sion again has ruled that the Issuance of transportation or reduqed rates to land agents is Illegal, says the Chlca go Record-Herald. All railroads in the west yesterday announced that thev would discontinue the practice, ami a majority of the 50.000 hind agents who are registered with Chair man Mahnney, of the Western Trunk Line committee, soon will find them selves out of work. A few of the most successful agents will be kept by the railroads on sal aiy and even this may be held Ille gal. The latest decision of the com mil tee was given to J. M. Dickinson general counsel of the Illinois Cen trnl: John Sebastian, who was in Washington represnting not only the Rock Island, but the Harrlinan lines, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas and the Santa Fe, and P. S. Eustis, for the Hill lines. Messrs. Dickinson nnd Fusils argued that under the law ! isses could not be given to land agents, while Mr. Sebastian Insisted that they could. Chairman Knapp, of the commission, declared It was the unanimous opinion of the commis sion that Ih? practice was Illegal. This means that the methods em- ploved In coloulxing the country west of the Mississippi river must be rev olutionized. The Rock Island system for example, has been sending fully 10.0(10 people evety two . welts through its various gitewavs into the southwest, and how this work can be continued Is a problem.' Under the oid system the progress In settllrjr va rious sections has been marvelous. A prominent nnd well known Boise man said to the Capital News of that place, In discussing the coal question and tho shortage In the supply of fuel here nnd all through this section of the state, that he believed, under the present laws, there Is a very simple remedy for the condition. The remedy he suggested was to purchase coal from Ellenshurg or Cle Elum In Washington, and have it shipped In here. He called nttentlon that an attempt had been mndn to do this, but tho Short Line hnd refused to haul cars from the Northern Pa cific upon which road the great coal fields of that section are located, but It Is his opinion now the recent legis lation would compel the Short Line to haul this coal and at a rate as reason able as It hauls Its own coal. The dlstnnce of the Union Pa cific coal fields from Boise Is about the same as the distance to Ellenshurg and Cle Elum and the roads would be forced to give the same rate for the same distance, and should they re fuse o handle tho coal, It would clearly be In restraint of trado and tho courts would compel them to transport It the same as other freight tendered to it.
