Department Store PENDLETON NEW YORK LETTER New York, Nov. 8. Portrait No. 9732 htt been removed from the rogues' gallery In the Tombs, for the chunky, fat little original Is gone be yond arrest . He Is dead In the morgue with a tiny puncture In his breast, a wound that did not look big enough to Injure a decent-sized house fly. No. 9733 was Joe Morello, a Black Hander of some years' standing and he has been killed by the mem bers of his own gang In the crook of Mulberry street, in a fight over the custodianship of an imported girl chattel. Joe was finished with what is known as a "Hamstrlnger." a needle 14 Inches long, with a wooden hnft. Frank Bonano, of Detective Offi cer Petrosinls staff of Italian detec tives, saw a row In that part of little Sicily that shoves a soiled elbow Into the ribs of Chinatown. When he came up to have a look on, and see fair play, he saw three men running away, and his old friend Morello lying on the street with the long, thin, shining weapon on the street beside him. A post mortem examination showed that No. 9732 was cleverly polished off, his heart having been pierced almost vertically. Suppressing New York Anarchists. A wave of anarchy Is at present sweeping over New York and the po lice are active. Emma Goldman, the erstwhile companion of the anarchist Gorky, falling to recruit the more staid class of people in the anarchist ranks, has succeeded In enlisting a number of school children, all in short dresses. Who can now say that the New York police are not active, after the daring raid, at extreme risk to their own lives, they have made. While the "anarchists" were In ses sion at the Manhattan Lyceum the po lice swooped down on them, with the' result that a lot of silly girls, none over 19 years of age, were locked up in police cells as common criminals. It transpired that two of the girls were students of tlie Normal college. The magistrate, a man of sense, or dered the Immediate release of the girls and they left court havlffg evi dently enjoyed the Joke. Illegal Resorts Closed. Gamblers, pool room runners and the keepers of Medal resorts here, whose places have been raided or shut down, announced that It has been caused by a general refusal to pay In creased blackmail for "protection." Some time ago a schedule of prices was arranged for "protection," which has now been made public. To open a gambling house cost from $1000 to J5000, according' to locality. To open a pool room, from $500 to $1000, was the blood money claimed. The dally tax on gambling houses ran from $25 to $30, and on pool rooms from $10 to $:s. A well known gambler, putting the case In a nutshell, has stated: "When the bunch of pirates who own the city get hungry for money they look to the pool rooms and gambling houses for it. As it is highway robbery we have struck against It, and will pay no longer," The Difference1. The reader can fix his own moral to the two following short stories: A lady living In Philadelphia trav eled all the way to this city, a dis tance of some 500 miles, In her steam yacht to purchase two poodles. She succeeded In her quest, purchased the dogs for $1000, and went her way rejoicing. While walking In Battery park a few days ago Mrs. Klngsland came across a curly headed, black-eyed child of 8, suffering from the effects of starva tion and shivering with the cold Since the death of the child's father and mother a short time ago, he has lived by bogging and has slept In the city parks. Mrs. Klngsland took the child to her home, provided him with clothes, and though not in very af fluent circumstances, Is going to pay the cost of his living and education until he can work for himself. OREGON IS SECOND. North Iuikotu Xow Load III Rcrlu niatlon Fund. A Washington dispatch says: From the passage of the reclamation law to the present time Oregon has led all the state In contributions to the re clamation fund, but figures given out To Brew the Best Beer the brewer must 6rst have, make at buy perfect Malt, for malt is the soul of the beer. Four-day malt cannot make perfect beer such as Pabst DlueRibbon because four-day malt Is a forced and unnatural process and beer made from four day malt lacks the nutri tious food elements which distinguish Pabst Beer. Pabst exclusive eiyht-day malt, the choicest hops, pure water and a process spotlets ly clean are the secret of the rich food value and the fine mellow flavor of Pabst Blue Kibbon Beer. Till ill iiufcr.VMii. v. Vwtniiroi MB me iront oi by the reclamation service today show that Oregon has lost her lead to North Dakota, although the margin Is small. This change Is traceable directly to the prosecution of land thieves that has been going on In Oregon for more than a year. To circumvent further fraud, all timber land entries In Oregon were suspended for a time and this suspension cut off the prin cipal source of public land revenues. Added to this the land prosecut'ons have had the effect of scaring off many entrymen, with the consequence that collections In the Oregon land of fices have fallen below normal. Receipts from land sales In North Dakota last year more than doubled receipts In Oregon. North Dakota has been a close send to Oregon for three years' past and her heavy sales last year carried her contributions ahead of Oregon's total, and the two states changed places on the list. Oregon for tho fiscal year ended June 30, 1906, turned into the re clamation fund $481,281. North Da kota contributed $933,803, Washing ton $494,183, and Idaho $301,234. Oregon's total contribution Is now $5, 230,661, as against North Dakota's $5,374,895. Washington's total Is $3, 545,615, and Idaho's $2,335,934. 'Tor years I starved, then I bought a 50 cent bottle of Kodol Dyspepsia Cure, and what that bottle benefited me all the gold in Georgia could not buv. I kept on taking It and In two months I went hack to my work as machinist. In three months I was a? veil and hearty as ever. I still use a little occasionally as I find it a fine blood purifier and a good tonic. May you live long and prosper." C. Nj Cornell, r.'oding, C!a Aug. 27, 1906.
