Echo, Nov. 5. The crib work and
foundation for the government dnm
across the Umatilla river, a mile and
a half above Echo, has been complet
ed and work has commenced on the
dam proper. This will be built of
solid concrete extending from bank
to bank, a distance of several nun
dred feet. The concrete Is spread In
layers, the width of the dam, as It
tapers to the top, and two feet thick
by 20 feet long, each 20-foot section
being separate and in alternate sec
tions. This has been recommended
by the engineers so In case by any
chance the dam might be damaged
by high water In the future. It could
only disarrange some of these, blocks
and repairs be quickly and easily
made.
A concrete mixer and gasoline en
glne mounted on wheels Is turning
out concrete as fast as four men with
wheelbarrows can take It away. This
Is a great saving over the old way of
mixing by hand and will very much
facilitate the work.
Greeks Cause Disturbance.
Several nights ago a lot of drunken
Greeks who are working on the gov
ernment ditch, created a disturbance
near the edge of town by yelling and
shooting, and then got out of town
before the city marshal could get to
the scene of the disturbance. Proba
bly thinking the matter was forgot
ten, or that they would not be recog
nized, they ventured Into town again
Friday, and six of them were prompt
ly arrested by Marshal Noble and
they spent the night in Jail. The next
morning they appeared before Re
corder Gillette to explain matters.
Two of them were fined $10 and costs
each, and the ringleader $20. The
other three were discharged with a
warning to not let it happen again.
Road Repairs.
The difficulties in the road running
up the river from Echo, closed by the
work on the government ditch, are In
a fair way to be settled, the city coun
cil having taken the matter up with
the intention of having the road fol
low along the railroad right of way
all the way on the south side of the
track. ..
Joseph Cunha has a force of men
and a pile driver at work below the
bridge and across the river from Echo
straightening the channel of the rver
so that In the future high water will
not damage hie property.
The regular meeting of the board
of directors of the Columbia Creamery
company, occurred at Dr. Ackley's of
fice Saturday.
Mrs. William Calvin Chilton, mon
odramlst, entertained a small but
appreciative audience at the M. E.
church Saturday evening.
Frank Brundage has reopened his
barber Shop In permanent quarters In
a part of the Morse & Straw building
across the street from the Hotel Echo
on Bridge etreet.
A force of carpenters Is how at
work on the new Ripper store build
ing at the corner of Main and Bonan
za street. Mr. Ripper will move his
stock of goods In and take possession
as soon as the building Is completed,
which will probably be in about two
weeks or less.
Fltzpatrlck Bros, have been de
layed In opening their cigar factory
here owing to the fact that their stock
of tobacco, ordered some time ago,
has not arrived. They have every
thing In readiness, however, and will
open for business as soon as the rail
road company can deliver their stock.
Joel Halstead's new residence on
Dale street Is now finished and the
family will move in and take posses
sion this week. The building Is quite
a credit to the town.
M. J. Parmer shipped five cars of
beef cattle and one car of mutton
sheep to Lalng & Co. at Albina last
week.
Some of the rock men working on
the government ditch east of the rail
road track Inside the city limits, are
getting careless and using too much
powder. Someone may get hurt If
they keep up this practice; rocks
from their blasting have been thrown
beyond the depot building.
