themselves upon the subject after In
specting the school.
The people of Weston showed an
excellent spirit In entertaining the
party during its brief stay in the city,
and during the short meeting in the
auditorium, the business men and citi
zens of Weston filled the room to
overflowing.
President French exhibited In a
practical manner the wide scope of
the territory served by the Weston
Normal by having students from dif
ferent counties and outside staes
stand to be counted separately. In
this demonstration, the members were
convinced that the Weston Normal
was anything but a local school for
Weston and Umatilla county, for al
most every county in the eastern part
of the state was represented, besides
four outside states.

Rare mingling of rollicking fun,
serious discussion of grave Issues and
hearty goodfellowshlp was enjoyed a
the banquet given to the two visiting
governors and members of the Oregon
legislature at Hotel Pendleton by Pen
dleton Commercial club, last night.
At 9 o'clock the guests assembled
at the gracious dining hall of Hotel
Tendleton, where an elegant repast
had been prepared by W. A. Brown
and after opening prayer by Rev. H
B. Knlsht, field secretary of Pendle.
ton academy, T. C. Taylor, who had
charge of the program, Introduced
Governor Albert E. Mead, of Wash.
Irgton. who in a stirring address of
five minutes pledged the state of
Washington to assist Oregon in bring
ing about the opening of the Colum
bia river and the development of thu
northwest through co-operation and
frequent inter-state conferences.
Following Governor Mead, Gover
nor Chamberlain of Oregon, addressed
the guests, renewing his enthusi
astic promises to further In every way

After the addresses by the gover
nors, T. V. Taylor, ex-presldent of the
Oregon senate, called the mock ses
sion of the legislature to order. Thu
session was begun by the calling of
the roll of members present by Chief
Cleik John McCourt, 21 representa
tive;, and 11 senators responding to
roll call.
When President Taylor announced
that the receiving of bills was In or
der, Senator J. N. Whealdon of Was
co, presented senate bill No. 101, pro
vldlng for the extension of the port
age road from the Three Mile rapids
to The Dalles. The bill was ably
supported by Senator Whealdon, J. N.
Teal of Portland, and Governor Mead
and upon putting the question the bill.

house," end was the cause of sharp
parliamentary tilts between the mem
bers In the fear that their thirst would
not be fviry provided for.
Frank Davey closed the session with
the introduction of a bill approprl
atlng $100,000 for the expenses and
entertainment of the "third house,"
and after a few serious remarks by
Representative Barrett, of Washing
ton county on the benefits of the ex-
cursion, In which he said that al'
though he was a native of Washing!
ton county, Oregon, and had lived
continually in the state for over BO

been east of The Dalles, and by Pres
ident T. C. Taylor, the session closed.

the legislative excursion to Walla
Walla yesterday, was Representative
Herman Rothschild, the lone demo
cratic member of the next house of
representatives In the Oregon legislature.
Mr. Rothschild arrived In Pendle
ton vesterday morning from his home
In North Powder and during the
morning spent the time In greeting
old Pendleton friends.
Mr. Rothschild was formerly a res
ldent of Pendleton, having been em
ployed in the mercantile establishment
of Bean & Rothschild In this city over
20 years ago. The store was located
in the building now occupied by the
Pendleton Drug company and J. E,
Mean, the well known pioneer and
late stock Inspector ot Umatilla coun
ty, was settlor member of the firm.
At the time Mr. Rothschild was a
clerk In the store, Joe Connolly, the
well known sheepman, then a young
man In his teens, was bookkeeper for
the firm.
Mr. Rothschild left here In May,
1885, and went to North Powder.
where he engaged In the mercantile
business. He has been located at
that place ever since and now enjoys
a large business. For a number of
yean he was a partner of Henry Gor
ham at that place, but of late yearj
has conducted his business alone.
He has always been prominent In
county polities and hns taken consid
erable Interest in public affairs, but,
he pecepted the nomination for the
legislature against his will, as he has
never desired office.
Mr. Rothschild has a genial dispo
sition and has a strain of genuine
humor In his make-tip and anticipates
considerable fun In the coming ses
sion of the legislature by reason of his
unique and lonely condition, political
ly. In the house.
However, he Is well versed In the
needs of eastern Oregon and will be
prepared to assist In making laws for
the county which he will represent and
for the entire state.
IS BREAKING 4000-ACRE RANCH.
BETTERMENT OF BUSINESS.
Local Lawyer to Farm on Big Scale
In Montana.
A. D. Stlllman is now having the
sod broken on his recently purchased
4000-acre ranch In Montana. He has
several large gang plows operated by
traction engines at work, and 60 acres
a day are being broken. The machin
ery was shipped to the place over a
now abandoned track of the Northern
Pacific, and the plowing outfit made
three carloads.
The ranch owned by Mr. Stlllman
was formerly swamp land, but was
drained several years ago. It has
every Indication of being very pro
ductive and will be seeded to grain
this year. Mr. Stlllman is now In the
city after having passed several weeks
In personally supervising the work on
his ranch.

Harry Mcllrlde and Miss Dora Darr
were united In marriage at 7:30 last
evening at the Thompson Street M. E.
church parsonage by P.ev. Robert
Warner. But a few Immediate friends
of the young people were present.
The gioom is In the livery business
at Athena, while the bride lives
Adams and has hr-en engaged In teach
ing school. Both of the couple are
well and favorably known to many In
the county. They returned to Athena
today, where they will make their
home.
New Machinery nml Larger Quarter
at Pendleton Steam Cleaning and
Dyeing W ork ,
Improvements are now being made
at the Pendleton steam cleaning and
dve works by Messrs. Lorlmer and
Fell, which when completed will en
able them to handle their business
much better than at present. In the
rear of the old rooms on Alta street
a dyeing room has been constructed
which will be devoted to that class
of work and to roourlng. The front
room, which Is used for tailoring pur
poser, is also being enlarged, and i
third room between the two will be
taken up by the machinery, which ln
eludes a boiler, engine and other ap
paratus.
E. K. Lorlmer Is now in Kansas
City UDOn a combined business and
pleasure trip, but Is expected home
within a few days. In the meantime
the business Is being managed by Mr,
