The Athena Bachelors' banquet last Saturday evening was attended by about 100 persons. After supper, music and dancing was enjoyed by all. Ed Barrett, the contractor, accom panied by his wife and son, has re turned from La Grande, where Mr. Barrett completed a new dwelling house for Mrs. Eva Boddy. At Wr. H. Hays' real estate office May be seen an exceptionally large turnip. It was raised on the Brucher mountain ranch east of town, and weighs 13 3-4 pounds and measures 32 Inches In circumference. Miss Ora Rhodes has returned to Madras, Crook county, where she will remain until after the holidays. Theodore Gardabe, recently of Den ver, has accepted a position as sales man for the Mosgrove Mercantile company. Last evening the Royal Male quar tet appeared before a good sized audi ence in Athena. The quartet Includes a humorous reader, giving a reading In make up and dialect. Weston. Oct. 26. Reports are cur rent at Weston to the effect that the Vanoil sawmill Is In difficulties and has been closed under attachment. Several of the men who have been working at the mill. It is understood, are minus their salaries, and Dave Read, who was employed there was arrested the first of the week for tak ing strenuous means to get his pay. Read had been employed by William Vancll and he came to Weston with a lo.-id of lumber which he sold for $27 to Allen Garrett and pocketed the money. The understanding was to Invest the proceeds for provisions for the mill. The outcome of the case is not yet known, but Read considers the transaction a fair one. The mill is situated on Basket mountain at the head of Couse creek, and was established bv William Van cil some months ago. It has a ca pacity of 10,000 feet of lumber dally. Mrs. T. W. Turner, of Helix, has been visiting at the home of Mrs. A. F. Turner during the past week.
