Strong Association PenmiHlH Preser vation of Xlugnni. Milwaukee. Wis.. Oct. 25. At a I ver lurgi-ly attended convention of the American Civic association hero today, the campaign waged by the association for the preservation of Niagara Falls was continued with great zest. J. Horace McFarland, the presi dent of the association, announced that the lurge commercial Interests which had been mnklng such free use of the water power afforded by the falls fought hard for their alleged rights, but the power of an aroused public sentiment was too hard tor them. President Roosevelt had given tha association cordial co-operation in its fight and valued assistance was ren dered by Congressman Burton, of Ohio; chairman of the rivers and har bors committee of the house of rep resentatives, and In recognition of their services both gentlemen men tioned had been made life members of the association. The Hon. Henry McFarlnnd, one of the commissioners of the District of Columbia, discuss ed "Our National Capital" and the question of the Appalachian reserva tions, was also considered. The diversity of Interests covered by the association was well indicated by the matters which formed subjects for discussion at the convention There were reports on Women's Out door leagues, arts and crafts, child ren's gardens, city making, libraries, public nuisances, parks and public reservations, railroad Improvement rural Improvement, school extension and social settlement. 9 IVkMf if m r rvrtHW nn kit .-y sxr to osr oFrce Wonderful Bargains OX OUR 5c COUXTER. 10c Pearl Buttons, doz.... ,"C 10c Lamp Burners ,C 2 Balls Darning Colton . . SHIRTWAISTS XO MORE. When the Smnrt Girl Goes Shopping She Must Call for "Blooze." Not to give the French pronuncia tion "blooze" to the word blouse is Just now to be hopelessly out of fash ion. And to call a separate waist a "shirtwaist" Is to commit the unpar donable sin. No matter whnt the ma terial or style of the garment the edict has gone forth that anything in the shnpe of a separate waist must hence forth go under the generic term or blouse, and that the French pronun ciation of this word must be given In ( all cases. "It's dreadfully hard always to re- member to say 'blooze Instead of i shirtwaist." sighed one young thing Washington, Oct. 24. It has now been definitely stated in official cir cles that the Idea which originated with President Roosevelt of placing a tax on accumulated wealth has taken a very practical shape and tnnt at the next session of congress the matter will be .Introduced., Mention, however, should be made of the fact that It 's not the Idea of the president to have the matter fln- niiv Horirtod nt the next session of consress which will last only three months, but he has always found It good policy to bring such reforms to the attention of the country In a short session, so as to arouse discussion and generate public opinion for use In the long session of the following congress. Another important matter congress has to consider at next setting Is the federal licensing of corporations, but It has now been settled that it is to the fortune tax that the president will de- vote most of his attention.
