Freewater, Oct. 23. A meeting was
held in Freewater Wednesday eve
ning, which was well attended by
farmers In the east end who are In
terested In Irrigation. The following
resolutions were adopted, to be for
warded to the legislative committee
on Irrigation:
"Whereas, Experience in this vicin
ity has shown time and again that nil
available water in the Walla Walla
river during the low water season has
been apportioned for a beneficial use,
and.
"Whereas, Great difficulty has been
experienced In the past and is being
experienced at this time in determin
ing the water rights upon the said
Walla Walla river and in the distribu
tion of the same;
"Whereas, Xot all the sections of
Oregon require the same amount of
water to Insure good crops;
"Therefore, let the next session of
the legislature pass an immigration
law which shall provide sure, reason
able and economical systems for de
termining any and all vested water
rights in the state; provide means
whereby the state shall acquire title
to all the waters which are not applied
to a beneficial use, the same tt be
held for future appropriation and ap
plication, and provide a system for
the proper distribution of any and
all determined water rights."
These resolution were adopted by
the Citizens' committee of the Walla
Walla valley. At this meeting the
benefits of the Hood River Irrigation
convention were discussed.

he has been having a serious time with
his foot ever since. He Is able to get
about with the assistance of a cane a

J. H. Hall, cashier of J. L. Elam's
bank, will move Into his new resi
dence shortly.
Elaborate preparations are being
made for a mask ball which will take
place In the Badgero hall on the eve
ning of October 27. Keene's full or
chestra from Walla Walla, will fur
nish music for the occasion.

More Cattle Sent Out of Jlie Interior

Year.
Alba, Oct. 23. Weather continues
very cool, with heavy frosts at night,
Practically all the cattle of this
country are gatthered Into the pas
tures. It Is estimated that more beef cat
tle are passing over the trails from
the Interior this year than In any pre
vious year In the history of the state.
The "Weary Willies" continue to
come Into the Interior to take up tim
ber claims. What these fellows ex
pect to do with these claims Is the
question which is puzzling settlers In
this locality. Who will be the ulti
mate owners?
Ed Rhlnehart has sold his dairy at
Alba and will move to Portland to re
side. Jacob Born, who recently sold his
farm to Walter Adams, has moved to
Pendleton to reside this winter.
The 5-year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Judd Mores died Saturday with
croup. The funeral was held In the
church at this place and Interment
took place In Alba cemetery.
A. S. Quant, who Is visiting his old
home In Michigan, Is expected to re
turn home In about two weeks.
Miss Pearl Connell Is visiting friends
in Milton.
Judge H. J. Bean's cattle came down
from the mountains to his McKay
creek headquarters this week, in
charge of George Bolin.

CORN GROWS IN IDAHO.

niptt. The adaptability of this section for
corn growing has been proved the
past summer In a manner that leaves
no chance for doubt and next seqson
will see a large acreage planted here,
says the Emmett Index. The upper
Payette valley will hereafter trot m
the same class as Iowa, Kansas, Ne
braska and other corn producing
states, both in quality and yield per
aire.
Down the valley about six miles, on
the river bottom, B. F. Price this year
has grown an acre of coin that will
yield from 75 to 100 bushels. Neither
Iowa nor Kansas ever produced any
better. The stalks range In height
from 12 to 18 feet and carry from
two to four ears. The grains arc
large and plump and the cob is filled
clear to the end. The variety is
known as the Missouri white. Mr.
Price was In town the other day after
a supply of step ladders in order to
gattur his crop, and left a few ears
at the Index office, and they have
been added to our display of fruit.
Next year he will considerably In
crease his acreage and will furnish
seed to his neighbors.
