That Fendleton Is a healthful place In which to live Is shown by the fact that It has been over five months since any contagious disease was re ported within the city. Vnder the law physicians are required to report all contagious aliments at the record er's office so that the house affected may be properly quarantined. An In vestigation this morning revealed the fact that the last entry was made upon June 11, when a case of scar let fever was noted. Since that time not a solitary case of scarlet fever, measles, smallpox, mumps or even chlckenpox has occurred within this city. During the summer there has been much typhoid and considerable other fever, though a large percentage of the former cases have been brought here from the surrounding country or towns. Now that the cooler weather has set In the situation is improving dally and there are fewer cases at this time than at any time since last spring. "As soon as the river rises the wa ter supply will become better and there will be less sickness than at present," said Dr. Henderson thl morning. For the fever that has oc curred during the summer that phy sician holds the water supply partly responsible, and Is an earnest advocate of a filter system for the city. SECOND CROP STRAWBERRIES. STEALS A STOVE. Anticipating a Cold Winter Some Hi U f Takes Mr. Hunzlker's Heater. That It is not safe to leave a Btove out in a yard during the summer Is shown by the recent experience of Louis Hunzlker, who is minus a heater. Several months ago the Hun zlker family moved from their little cottage on Alta street, to one of tm? Vert houses on College. In doing so they left a heating stove In the back yard, as they had no need of the same during the warm weather. On look ing for the same several dayB ago the stove was found to be missing, and its whereabouts la still a mystery to Mr. Hunzlker. STRIKE IS SERIOUS JESSE LIECAI.I.EX HOME FROM PORTLAND. Grand Rondc Soil Produces Excellent Late Crops. The La Grande Chronicle says: Walter Lyman, who is extensively Interested In the orchard Industry at what was formerly the Oldenburg place. In the hills above town, brings the report that there Is a fine crop of strawberries on the place, many of them being over an inch In diameter. The plants are covered with berries in all stages from the bloom to the "finished product," and the folks are gathering all they need for household use every day. Strawberries In the fall are not an unusual thing, by any means, but these plants were set out only lust spring and they have sent out runners a distance of two to three feet and produced a crop all within six months and without irrigation or other attention. Three Weston Men Who Went to Port land to Work on Waterfront Three Weeks Ago, Have Varied Experience Over 1200 Men Are Now Out Strike May Continue Indefinitely, Twelve hundred employes of the waterfront In Portland are on a strike, the exporters refuse to recognize the unions, land lubbers cannot load ships properly and all the available force ol extra policemen and detectives in Portland Is required to prevent a se rious riot at the waterfront Is th way In which Jesse Lieuallen, of Wes ton. sizes up the labor situation in Portland. Mr. Lieuallen, Ed Wood and Frank Stewart, of Weston, went to Portland three weeks ago to work on the water front, but during that time they have been unable to work but little owing to the continued strike. At the pres ent time there are about 1200 men out on the waterfront and unless some understanding is reached between th-.- warehouse companies and the men in conference called by Mayor Lane today, the prospects are that the strike will be long drawn out. Mr. Lieuallen Bays the captains of the grain ships are complaining of the way In which the land lubbers, strike breakers and "green" hands load the vessels and declare that load ing with such labor shall not proceed as the ships when Improperly loaded may easily founder or capsize in severe weather at sea. The three exporting companies In whose warehouses the strike Is in progress are the Kerr-Gifford, Bal four-Guthrie and the Pacific Coast Elevator companies. i'hc teamsters are now refusing to handle grain to or from these warehouses and the sit uation is becoming very serious. The strike breaking attempted In the early stages of the strike was a failure as the men Imported to work in place of the strikers were Inexperi enced and many of them Joined the unions as soon as they reached Port land and thus added only fuel to the flames. Mr. Lieuallen remained three weeks hut at the end of that time decided that he had had enough of waterfront service and came home this morning. Mr. Wood and Mr. Stewart remained In Portland and will work whenever permitted to do so. Alleges Rent Money Due. F. X.
