The follnwIiiK Interesting article on
the duties und treatment of the pro
fessional nurse wan written for the
Sunday Oregonlan by Dr. Amy Currln
of Pendleton, tho only practicing
womun physician, excepting the oi-le-0mthH,
In eastern Oregon.
While the urllcle deals with a sub
ject which belongs to the professions
entirely, yet the trained nurse und her
duties should be fumlllar to all as
sickness visltH even the most remote
purts of the country and comes at un
expected times. The Must Oregoninn
takes pleasure in presenting to ItH
readers thlB brief review from Dr.
Currln, who In u trulneil nurse uh well
ns a practising flslclan:
Whi n necessity demands the em
ployment of a professional nurse in
the home, many people are at a loss
to know how to treat her, or what to
do with her, and the hard life of the
trained nurse In private work has be
come proverbial, says Dr. Currln.
.Many are the tales of experience
which they can tell nurses who were
provided with the yellowest of laun
dry soap for the face and hands, Bhort,
rickety lounges to sleep upon
nurses who literally hud to herd the
family of youngsters out of the moth
er's sick room, and nurses who have
had to establish u system of disinfec
tion from floor to ceiling before at
tempting to care for the patient.
All this need not be necessary In
the majority of rnw, as It comes
from lack of management and knowl
edge. Very often the poorest of families
are most highly appreciative of the
trained nurse and her ways, while
others having plenty look upiii her
as a high-salaried hired .-'lrl and there
fore expect her to keep vigilant watch
20 hours out of the 24, wnether It is
necessary or not, In order to earn 13
a day.
Neither Is the nurso a washer
woman, nor cook, nor nursery maid,
tho the very rich may bestow gifts
upon her for extru services pretty
much as they would tip a colored por
ter. Still another class of people regard
the nurse as a trained granny and all
the neighborhood flock to her for
herbs and recipes. Hut If she be con
scientious she will not be long Inform
ing them that her duties lie outside
the field of prescribing, which she
leaves to the physicians.
The nurse should have exclusive
care of the patient and nothing more
to do. That Is usually sufficient to
keep her busy.
On the other hand, she is not a
guest and If left to herself will take
are that she Is very little In your
way.
Preparing to receive tho nurse, you
should provide a room for her, If pos
sible, separate from the one occupied
by her patient or other members of
the family. Here she ran lay the fe'w
toilet articles and wcnrlng apparel
which she- brings with her. and during
those odd moments when she can
leave the patient, finds It a place for
total relaxation, that rests her more
than hours spent In the presence of
the family or patient with tho Impos
sibility of being alone. For the bet
ter the nurse feels herself, the better
work she will be nble to do.
Her bed. whether It be a cot In the
patient's room or an ordinary bed,
should be comfortable and clean, with
sheets and spread und extra comforts

to buy MENNEN'S BORATED TAL-
CUM because of its perfection and purity.
Butitdoe not pay to sell MENNEN'S
POWDER nearly as well, as it pays to
sell an imperfect and impure substitute
which, costing about half the cost of MEN
NEN'S, yields the dealer double profit.
The "just as pood" with which some
dealers try to palm off a substitute is true
any way. If it's only "just as good " for
the dealer why push the sale. If it's only
'just as good " for the buyer why risk aa
unknown preparation for MENNEN'S.
There's nothing just as good as MEN
NEN'S BORATED POWDER, and
the dealer who says there is, risks bis
customer's skin and safety to make aa
extra profit on a sale.

or blankets. She should be provided
with towels for her own personal use
and wash basin anil pitcher in homes
that are without bathroom nnd flx
t u res.
The trained nurse thus provided
for will take cure of herself with
out interfering with the family and
at the same time will have the feeling
of contentment that court with the
opportunity to attend to her personal
appearance and baths, which Is a part
of every nurse's routine.
Then there are the things which
she requires for the patient.
A plentiful supply of clean sheets,
towels anil nightgowns should be
placed at her disposal.
Most of the superfluous 'articles of
furniture nnd decoration should have
been removed from the room and a
broom, dustpan and dust cloths left
conveniently near. The nurse will
then brush up any dust or dirt ns It
gathers and ovoid the necessity of a
regular cleaning during the time the
patient Is 111 unless, of course, It be a
very prolonged illness.
Soap and sapolin should be provided
for cleaning the vessels used about
the patient, and n place for them to
he kept In the bath room or outhouse.
If the nurse prepares the patient's
diet, allow her to select from the pan
try such articles, like small sauce
pans, etc., that she will need nnd set
them to one side, together with the
tray nnd dishes used by the patient.
Then y.ou do not have medicine glasses
mixed with the drinking cups, and In
this way the nurse conducts n one-patient
hospital In your home without
trouble or anxiety on your part.
Then, too, remember that she
should have a little time out of doors
every day, and when relieving her for
this purpose try to farry out her
methods as strictly as she does thoze
of the doctor.
Occasionally people steal these op
portunities to bring In forbidden vis
itors or to feed the slek one some
extra dainty which when discovered
by the vigilant nurse cut short her
walks In the open nlr because she!
feels the responslbllty of her patient's
life resting upon her hands, and. tho
she cannot dictate to the family, she
will fight If need be for that patient's
welfare. .
Tho fact that your slek one Is re
ceiving the best and most skilful care
should be worth all the money paid
to a nurse, so let her stay in your
home, be as pleasant and agreeable
as possible and make her work as
eazy as you can.
