An advance In the retail prices of 'wood and coal will probably be an nounced In a few days. Dealers say that the higher prices are attributable to higher coat of labor and transporta tion. Some of the mines have already nnllflod the dealers of the advance. Though the new prices have not been made, the dealers state that they probably will be 50 cents a ton higher for onl per ton than heretofore. Of ficial of the North Yakima Artificial len & Cold Storage company, have announced that the price of Carbon HIM coal, which they use almost ex clusively, will be advanced to $6.60. other dealers say they are not yet prepared ot state positively what the advance will be but probably 50 cents per ton more. It was stated at the Cascade Lum ber company's mill this morning that wood was selling at the same price as before. As the price of wood Is ad vancing throughout all parts ot the state ns the winter comes on, the local wood dealers will probably mnke an early advance in the price. Yaki ma Republic. While Incar cerated I'rltes, so his cell mates say, several times attempted to set fire to his bedding at the time the cell was vacant. Three of the leading stockholders of the Iron Dyke mine. F. F. Curtze, C. M. Conrad and H. E. Fink of Erie. Pa., arrived here Tuesday and left yesterday for the mlne""on a general Inspection trip are several times mil lionaires and are furnishing the money for the Snake River road as far as Iron Dyke, which Is being built by contract by the Oregon Short Line railroad which will extend the lines from Iron Dyke to Lewlston.. The Iron Dyke people simply want an out let for their (copper ores. Beyond this the Iron Dyke people are not Interested In any railroad building In this section, reports to the contrary notwithstanding. They are miners and not rnllroaders. With the securing of transportation on Snake River. Conrad. Curts et al expect to establish the largest mining business In eastern Oregon. Baker City Dem ocrat. Official Experiments In Seepage. A. E. Wright and Arthur P. Stover. In charge of the Irrigation experiments In Oregon for the department of agri culture, jhave started a series of Inter esting experiments In seepage at Ir rlgon. Ore. Six pits 12 feet across tho top and three eet deep, of circu lar form and having the same degree of Incline that Is found In the walls of an Irrigation canal, will be built at Irrlgon In the sandy soil which Is en countered In ditch making In that dis trict. These pits will have various kinds of walls. In order to test the seepage accompanying each kind of Irrigation. The experts will use slny, strnw, oil, sand and slit tamped sol idly.
