The Journal known as "Bettor Fruit," contains the following: That exhibits of fine fruit at fairs Is one of the greatest and best of advertisements no one can deny. One of the editors of this paper spent a great deal of time at the Lewis and Clark fair, and most of It at the dif ferent fruit exhibits. Special obser vation and Inquiry of the managers In charge waa sufficiently convincing 'o Justify the assertion that no fruit grower should ever miss such oppor tunities. ' Easterners stood around amazed at our marvelous revelations in fancy fruit production. They were dazed with astonishment Many an eastern er envied us. Thousands secretly and openly resolved to close out their buslnesb at home, come west and be one of us. That many have made good this promise Is evident by the steady stream of passengers on all railroads com ing to the northwest, the great activ ity In business centers and the phe nomenal building growth, with sky scrapers galore. But all tl.ls does not exceed the wonderful activity of sales of orchard lands in all fruit districts, Therefore, we say to you always ex hibit at every opportunity. Aand now a word of advice. Do your best. Show fnncy fruit; nothing else is worth while. Figure ahead and lay away your choice specimens. See that everyone Is a beauty, and If the date in for ahead of the time when your fruit will be at Its best, pack your specimens nicely ond plnco -them In cold storage. Care of Orchard. The more thoroughly we under stand our work the more Intelligent ly we can do It, and frequently this means a grent saving In expense. Many of us too frequently take the rules and formulas In otr orchard work without knowing or asking why, which Is a very bod hnblt. You must know whnt Is what and why If you are going to be a sure result getter. If you don't conditions may be dif ferent, and fnllure instead of success be your harvest. To Illustrate my meaning take spraying for the codlln moth, Perhaps nothing we have to contend with In apple culture was less understood or more unlntelllgent ly combattcd and only a few years ago and even now In many places, many growers know but little about the habits, few did much Investigating, and ninny sprayed In a matter of fact way every two or three weeks, and many occasionally when convenient. In the last three years a great deal of ll.trlllgent Investigation has been made, and hundreds of orchardlstB are keen observers and sladents Just as murh as experimental station men. We need Just such practical men on this kind of work. It Is the duty of every orchardlst to himself and such work Is a help to everybody. Experimental station men and spe cial Investigators found 75 per cent of the first brood entered the calyx. They found to kill this 75 per cent It wns necessary to spray before the ca lyx closed. They discovered ordlnnrlly there Women as Veil as Men Are Mads miserable by Kidney and Bladder Trouble. This unpleasant trouble is due to a diseased condition of the kidneys and bladder and not to a habit as most people suppose. Women as well as men are made miser able with kidney and bladder trouble, and both need the same treat remedy. The mild and the immediate effect of wamD-Root is soon realized. Don't make any mistake, but remember the name, Swamp-Root, Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, and the ad dress, Binghainton, N. Y., on every bottle. are but two broods of codlln moth and spraying between broods, or every tow weeks, wag a waste of time and spray. But us orchardlsts went on spraying every 15 or 20 days that Is the lean crop getters putting on seven and eight sprays, until we were told differently. We must all understand our work thoroughly. We must know know why and the result. Then and not until then can we fashion our work and outline methods to suit our own conditions in our own locality, and let me say not only districts are dif ferent, but orchards situated In the same locality are different In require ments on account of soil, slope or con dit'on. Discus matters with successful men; read the best papers and learn what others are doing; observe; in vestigate for yourself; understand why; work Intelligently and do your work thoroughly. Never cease to Im prove and you will grow better fruit, get better prices, and be a happier and better satisfied grower. COMMERCIAL BODIES CALLED. Trl-State Meeting at Spokane on Sep tember 25. New York Dispatch State Such M a Pi-ohuhllity, I tut Seattle ItcfiiHcti to Be Convinced, Believing the Story In a Stock-Jobbing Feeler to Boom Chi cago, Milwaukee & St. Paul and Ilurrlmun Line Stock With. New York, Aug .30. Many rumors continue to circulate concerning tha control of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Pr.ul railroad, and the belief grows stronger every day that It has been acquired by the Union Pacific. State ments to that effect are printed, not withstanding Harrlman's denial. It Is believed that the Milwaukee stock will eventually be lodged In the treasury of the Southern Pacific com pany which will Issue preferred stock as payment therefor. This would not Involve any legal difficulty. It is said, because the Milwaukee and Southern Pacific do not parallel each other an 1 are not competing roads within the meaning of the law. In relation to which the Seattle News says: The rumors referred to In the above dispatch are receiving attention In Se attle railroad circles as well as In New York. They are generally dls cred'tcd. The actual facts are that some parleying was done In New York looking to a fusion but that the deal was not perfected nor nearly so at the time. When here James J. Hill said the union was probable as the owners of the two railroads were very much the Bame. But conferences are common In Wall street. Sometimes they are gen uine; at other times they are a mere trick. It Is notable that the fusion was announced with renewed empha sis at the same time as the dividends on Union and Southern Pacific. As Henry Cles says the Intoxicating ef fect of these dividends was highly contrglous. People were willing to credit anything In the stock line and those who had Milwaukee to sell profited by the reported union. Mil waukee as well as other Ftocks bound ed upwards and the bears were left out In the cold. The Milwaukee Is a splendid prop erty. It will enhance In value when the Pacific extension to Seattle Is completed. It Is Improbable therefore that William Rockefeller, James Hen ry Smith and other large holders would sell out pending such Increase In value. Moreover, the Harrlmnn roads do not parallel the Milwaukee, so that one strong reason for fusion Is lack ing. Of course the Harrlman Hicifics. would like to keep the Milwaukee out of the Pacific field, but that would mean heavy loss to the Milwaukee even as a partner. Moreover, the anti-trust law may be used to tie up the deal. Some dis gruntled stockholder may set up a uit that would last fur vears, causing loss to nil concerned. .Schemes such as the exchange of stock do not avail In this Inquisitorial time.
