Alba, Aug. 19. Harvest will wind
up in about 10 days. The weather
hns been favorable with only one
slight rain to stop the progress of
storing and stacking. All crops are
In good condition.
The next Job Is the rounding up of
the beef cattle and putting them in
pastures and have them handy to
look at when the buyers come
around. Cattle are in good condition
this year and prices a little better
than last.
There was a horse buyer here last
week who bought a carload to ship to
Honolulu. He was a native of that
country and stated that if his pur
chase proved a success he would be
back here In six weeks and buy more.
He paid good prices for 1200-pound
horses.
Jim Huston and family have re
turned from Ontario, where they
moved last fall. They do not like
that country well enough to settle
down and make a home. He says
the weather there is as hot as at
Pendleton.
Miss Rhoda Hoover and Charles
Semple have returned to Pendleton
after a week's outing at Hidaway
Springs.
Mrs. Elreth and child of Portland,
who have been rusticating at the
springs, are now visiting at Alba.
A large number of people went to
Hidaway today to spend the day.
When the rush of work Is over the
harvest dance will take place at Hid
away. It promises to be a large gath
ering. The fall races will take place on
the Alba track Tuesday and Wednes
day. Following each day's races
there will be a grand ball at night.
B. B. Lane of Pendleton, has bought
the blacksmith shop here, and Is do
ing a good business.
FIGHT WITH BEAST,
Occurred at Hock Creek Near Camp
of Judge Currey.
What Is believed to have been the
biggest wrestle with a bear since the
days of Jacob and the angel took
place Friday night on Rock creek In
the vicinity of Judge Alf L. Currey's
camp. Exact particulars are difficult
to obtain but the story is something
like this, with Judge Currey as the
hero:
-A man named lllerton has a small
cabin on Rock creek near the camp
of Judge Currey and other Bakerites
who are enjoying the scenery of the
mountains. Shortly before daylight
on Saturday morning lllerton awoke
with the conviction that there was a
boar in his ckbin. He got up and ran
against the bear. The bear was
very hungry an 1 tiled to eat lllerton.
lllerton protected himself with a
shovel nnd yells. The yells awakened
Judge Currey who was camped near
by and he came to the rescue. With
a shovel and a pick the two men
made enough noise to awaken every
man on the mountain from the Max
well mine to Haines.
In the morning when the smoke of
battle had cleared away all that was
dlscernabie were the bare foot prints
of Judge Currey hitting a hot foot
down the creek road toward Haines.
That Is why Judge Currey came to
town Saturday afternoon. He re
turned today with a gattllng gun and
a wbale harpoon. lllerton has a ri
fle but no cartridges. Baker City

Owns, in Conjunction With Drum
heller, Immense Stock Farm.
Fay LeOrow, cashier of the First
Xational Bank of Athena, is one of
the principal owners In one of the
largest stock ranches In the north
west, says the Athena Press.
The big cattle ranch is situated in
the Crab Creek country up in Wash
ington. Last year Mr. LeOrow and
the Drumhellers of Walla Walla pur
chased the lands and hundreds of
head of Hereford cattle of an English
lord. An Idea of the magnitude of
this great ranch may bo had when It
Is learned that 15 sections of land are
under fence, in addition to thousands
of acres of outside range which the
company controls by virtue of watei
lights.
Several thousand head of cattle
forage on this excellent range, for the
Crab Creek lands are noted for suc
culent grass and plenty of It. Nearly
all of the stock ranging there Is
owned by the company, and nearly
every head '.3 marked with the white
foot of the Hereford.
This year In that portion of the
range under fence, 1100 head of little
white-faced Hereford calves sport
and play on the hillside, and next year
thero will be a greater number, for
only barren calves and heifers are be
ing sold out of the cow herds. An
Interesting sight it is to see 1100
calves In one bunch, and more Inter
esting still, when you cannot tell "one
from another," for with their well
known Hereford characteristic, they
all look alike to yon.
Over 800 head of beef cattle have
been sold from the ranch this season
the greatest number being purchased
by Walla Walla buyers.
