Another attempt Is to be made to discover the source of the stream In the Interior of Vancouver Island from which were take nthe golden bullets with which the Indlnns hunted In days gone by, Is the report thnt comes from Vancouver, P. C. Chief Good, of the Nannlmo tribe. will ascertain If he can succeed where white men hnve failed." He says there has been a legend In his tribe for sev eral generations thnt about the center of the Island there Is a stream with small falls. Over the falls gold descends nil the Ime and If a hnsln isthrust Into the wnter golden grains can he caught herein. "There." says the rhlef, "Is plenty of the stuff thnt the white men worship In blind obliteration of all that Is good and noble. At the bnse of the fulls Is almost solid mass of gold and In earlier days many Indians cut away chunks make bullets so that they might hunt and get dully food." Frenchmen Find Treasure. It Is a matter of history thnt In 1S62 two Frenchmen left Victoria to hunt for the Midas stream. They re- urned some months later with well filled pokes, hut money or persuasion cou'd not Induce them to make the trip again, and their faces blanched with terror when they spoke of this curious Eldorado. This bears out the superstition of the Indians that a ter rible god holds guard over the treas ure, that there Is something super natural, something dreadful about the golden hive. On this account few redskins have ever been Induced to Join the white parties which from time to time have been made up to look for the source of the gold. Chief Good, In the light of his modern education, says ho has no fears of the supernatural and he has obtained from an aged Indian a plnn of the region of supposed wealth and when he feels like It he will at tempt the Journey thereto, though he knows thnt the way Is difficult and the task requires courage and endurance. W hy the Dollar of 180! U Rare. There uro two stories regarding the rarity nf the silver dollar of 1804, the most gem-rally accepted one bolng the one which accounts for the scarcity by saying that they were sent to Africa to pay the soldiers engaged In war between this- country and Tripoli. There were only 19,670 of them coined. Another version of the story which accounts for their rarity Is that a ves sel hound to China with almost the entire mintage of that year was lost. The former story appears to he the most likely explanation. Read th. East Oregonlan.
