EIGITt PAGES. DAILY BAST OFEGONIAN, PENDLETON, OREGON, SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1900. PAGE SEVEN. Among the Exchanges j of the Inland Empire j Shot Into a I to of Powder. The residents of Pierce were star tled Tuesday evening by a terrific ex ploulon, nnd for a few moments were at a loss to know whiit had happened. InveHtlKiitlon Hhowed that a part of a box of ftlant powder had been thrown In the dump at the north end of Main street and George Oaffney, unaware of what the box contained, shot Into It. The effect wus Imme diate, the report of the gun being en tirely drowned by the explosion that followed, llulldlngu were shaken and In those neareHt the spot window gluss was shattered. For several sec onds after the report earth, sticks, bones and pebbles were falling in the street. Fortunately the box of explosives lay on the side and near tlio foot of a solid bank and was but partially covered with old debris so that the force was away from a number of boys who stood within a few feet of the brink of the bank, otherwise the story we have to relate would be a sad one. How Ihe powder came there Is a mystery, the general supposition being that It was a part of a lot tome one supposed to be spoiled and dump ed It out. Fierce Miner. Dr. Grltiiuin llomul Over. Dr. C. L. Grltman, who Is charged with criminal assault, was today bound over to appear before the next session of the district court under bonds of jr.OoO at the hearing which was concluded here today. Dr. Orlt man Is accused by Miss Verne Mc- Hanly, the 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McIIardy. His bondsmen are Fred Veatch, M. J. Shields, E. X. Brown and CI. A. Rube- dew. The testimony was resumed this morning with Miss McIIardy on the stand. One of the Important features of her testimony was the contradic tion of some of the statements made yesterday relative to her condition ot the time of the alleged assault. The defense Introduced no testimony, this being taken as evidence that Orlt man'B nltomeys did not want to dis close their line of defense. The only other witness to be examined was John McIIardy. the father girl. Moscow Mirror. of the Dairy I lend of Sixty Vow. The incorporation of the Spokane & Yakima railway this week has brought to light another scheme for the development of the country lying In east Moxoe and In the White Bluffs country. It is understood that the scheme of this company is to build an electric line from Spokane to White Bluffs, cross the Columbia Into Ben ton, follow the Columbia to the Yaki ma county line nnd then come down through the Moxee valley to this city. While this Is a feasible project the proposition does not strike the aver nge Yakima person as being possible of realization In the near future. Yaklmn Republic. I 'ell nnd Broke Spinal Column. A. J.
