The O. U. & N. company has made
a round trip rate of one and a third
fare from this city for the Sells-Fore-paugh
circus which comes to Walla
Walla on August 9. The round trip
fare will be $1.90, the return limit
good for 24 hours after date of sale.
The circus will exhibit In La Grande
on August 8, and will give Pendleton
the marble heart, as usual.
Completing Stone Wall.
The stone wall being built by W.
F. Matlock on the property recently
purchased, from J. H. Howard on the
north bank of the river, Is now about
completed and the work of leveling
down the lots for building purposes
will continue. A wide driveway will
also be constructed from the Main
street bridge to the Pendleton acad
emy property, making a convenient
and attractive outlet to purchasers of
property on the Matlock tract.
Crew Moved to Eolio.
C. L. Swain, who is in charge of the
strenm topographic work for State
Engineer Twls In this county, moved
his crew of four men from Freewater
to Echo, this week, where the work
will be continued. His work Is being
done In accordance with the provis
ions of the Irrigation law, requiring
stream topography and measurement
to be made In conjunction with the
reclamation service. The work Is
practically complete In the east end
of the county.

Warehuse, has returned from a vaca
tion passed in Portland and other

H. T. Hendryx. the well known min
ing broker who formerly resided here,
has been in the clly today on his way
to Portland from Sumpter.
N. A. Davis and J. E Davis and wife
of Milton, arrived on the night west
bound train and left this morning for
the north end of the county.

this morning for Meacham to Join

mountains arranging a camping place.
Mrs. Phil McBrlan will leave Satur
day morning for Spokane, where she
will visit her daughter. Mrs. Mae

will visit for a few days after which
she will go to Willamette valley for
a visit.

Frank Murphv, of the Vaughan-

weeks camping trip above Binghum
Springs.
J. A. Howard, formerly of this city
and until recently in the banking bus
iness at Sumpter, has disposed of his
Interests there and is now living in
Nevada.
Rev. H. R. Shanple, piesldlng elder
of the Pendleton district of the M. E.
church south, passed through this
morning to his home In Milton, after
a visit at aL Grande.
J. P. Habershnm, of Seattle, solicit
or for the R. L. Polk directory com
pany, is In the city today preparing
matter for a forthcoming edition of
the nortliwest directory.
Conductor J. L. McCrary, of the
Pendleton-Huntington passenger run
on the O. R. & N., is now at Hot Lake
for a few days. Conductor R. Wlss
ler, of La Grande, Is on the run In his
absence.
Conductor F. L. Coykendall and
f.un'ly are now nt their fruit farm
near l.a Grande. Mr. Coykendall will
not resume his run until he Is com
pletely recovered from an attack of
appendicitis.
F. R. Wlnslow, of Pendletno. Is In
the city, accompanied by his father
from Sheridan. The young man was
at one time an apprentice with C. H.
Hinges, and now has a prosperous
jewelry business In eastern Oregon.

DEADLY FEUD REOPENED.
Regular Annnal Man Hunt Has Beeriin
in Kentucky.
Beaver Creek, Ky., July 19. Dick '
Hall and John Thornberry, feud lead- j
ers, were assassinated from ambush
as they rode a mountain trail. They I
tried to return the first volley, but i
the. second killed both. The two men
were leaders of rival families which
have fought for years. There has been
peace during the past year.
John Thornberry married a mem
ber of the Hall family. His followers I
declared he thus betrayed his clan,
and the killing resulted. Both sides
are equipped for strife. Each Is mas
ter of about 40 men. Entrenchments
are made In the mountains In Floyd
and Knott counties.
