That George Mitchell was a sane man when he slew "Joshua' 'Creffleld was the ccncluslon arrived at by phy sicians of Reattle who performed a post mortem examination on the young man's brain, which was normal In every detail. , The bullet which ended Mitchell's life went In below the left ear and ploughed through the head, lodging In the right Jawbone. It did not touch the brain. Death was due to a hem orrhage caused by the severing of the carotid arre"ry. Mitchell's sanity Is expected to have an Important bearing on the case of his sister when they pyt her on trial for murder. The report that the Holy Rollers are assembling at Seattle has caused activity in the police department. Chief Wappenstcln states he has had civniuh of this seel, and that no more of thr-m will be tolerated In Seattle. The police arc now working on clues which may Implicate others of this sect In Mitchell's murder. Story or Holy Itollerlsm. Holy Rollerlsm as taught by "Joshua" Creffleld, had Its Inception at Corvallls, Ore., In the spring of 1003. Creffleld held camp meetings and succeeded In getting a group of followers at once. Previous to this he had been a Sal vation Army worker. He was born In Germany and was u deserter from the German army. On the night of January 4, 1904, his fanatical teachings had gone so such lengths that Indignant fathers and husbands of Corvallls women took him out and gave him a coat of tar and feathers. They gave similar treatment to one of his male followers, C. Ttrooks. The men were warned that they would be killed should they ever return to Corvallls. The next day Creffleld returned i covertly and was secreted by the Hurt woman under the floor of their home. Hire he dispensed with his clothing. proclaimed himself a prophet of Cod and carried on his revolting orgies In the name of religion. July 2R. 1901. Creffleld's hiding place became known and he was taken out and put In Jill. In the meantime KMhtr Mitchell, because of his Influence over her. had been sent to the Roys' and Girls' Aid ... 1 ' ' C. The Dulles Chronicle gives the fol lowing account of a change that will be made In the town by the O. R. & N.: Within a few days work will be be gun on the culvert which will conduct the water of Milt creek from Its pres ent course across the O. R. ft N. pe ninsula to the river and admit of the creek bed being; filled in. The contract has been let to L. Pearson, D. S. Baraum ft Co., who In a short time will have 60 men em ployed In digging a tunnel 800 feet long through the peninsula, prepara tory to putting In a rock culvert 16x16 feet. The south end of the culvert will commence at the small red car house near the west end of the bridge, running directly north to the river. It Is expected that the work will consume about eight months, and when completed a large force wilt be gin filling in from the Hudson place, at the west end of Second street to the mouth of the creek, the material for filling being secured along the O. R. ft N. road east of the city. society. After being kepi there a tew weeks she was sent to her father's home In 'Illinois, she was not per mitted to return to Oregon until Cref fleld was sent to the penitentiary. Other women, Ini ludlng Mrs. O. V. Hurt and Maud Hurt, were sent to the Insane asylum for n short time because of Creffleld's Influence over them while he was secreted under the Hurt residence. Tried in Portland. Creffleld, n few days after his dis covery, was brought to Portland and tried on a statutory charge preferred by Rurges 13. Starr, husband of Mitchell's elder sister, a Creffleld vic tim. . In August Creffleld. was found guilty. He refused to have a lawyer and tried to clear himself hv reading passages rrnm tne Hlble. When found guilty he made no effort to secure leniency, simply stating that, like Otyrlst. he was misunderstood. Soon after Creffleld went to prison his wife. Maud Hint Creffleld, whom he married shortly before being tar red and feathered, secured a divorce. There were no further Holy Roller demonstrations, and seemingly the dangerous craft was broken up. Illi Sentence Commuted. Early In February, lnos, Creffleld's lenience was commuted by good be havior, and he left the state 'orison, going to California. From there he got In correspondence with his former wife, who had remained with her fath er, O. V. Hurt of Corvallls. A recon clllatlen was effected. Creffleld re tarded to th' vicinity of Corvallls and got a number of women nnd one man. Frank Hurt, to go to a lonely spot on the beach In Lincoln county. His purpose was to found a Holy Roller colony. He made particular efforts to se cure Esther Mitchell to his keeping, saying she was to be the mother of a second Christ, who was to be born to the world. Tjte In April of this year. Mitchell after being released from the Good Samaritan hospital In Portland, where he had been confined with an atUick of measles, declared to close friends his Intention of killing Creffleld. He told several persons God hnd told him to remove the Holy Roller from the earth fcr ruining his sisters. Mitchell Iyooklng for Creffielil. About May 1 Mitchell went to Al bany to search for Creffleld. While there he saw Maud Hurt Creffleld. and by following her learned that Creffleld was in Seattle. The Holy Roller prophet had gone there supposedly f ir the purpose of raising funds for the camp on the roast. May 7, early in the morning, Cref fleld and Maud Hurt Creffleld.-whom he had remarried, started down town to do some shopping. As they passed down First avenue Mitchell stepped suddenly behind Creffleld and shot him dead. Esther Mitchell at once denounced the art nnd seemed to care nothing as to the fate of her brother. I nlon Pacific Muy Scaxl Right of Way From Onuilia to Ogdcn. There Is a probability that before long travelers on Union Pacific trains will ride through an alfalfa field be tween Omaha and Ogden a remark able, attenuated fleldw 20 Oyards in width and a thousand miles In length. For a long time the Union Pacific has been considering the problem of eliminating weeds along the right of way, and numerous schemes have been suggested with this end In view, but it was not until demonstration was made that alfalfa will grow without irrigation that the possible key to the problem was found. Now, it is said, the railroad com pany will experiment with alfalfa on the right of way and, Hhould the ex periment be successful, alfalfa will be planted between the fences of the right of way the entire distance from Omaha to Ogden. Alfalfa Is a hardy and close-grow ing plant, and where it has obtuined fo-jthold, all other vegetat'on is strangled and exterminated quickly. Wee is cannot grow In an alfalfa pn.oh, and those which obstruct the Union Pacific right of way would quickly be killed, once alfalfa was planted. The purpose of ridding the right of way of weeds is to prevent the growth of vegetation on the roadlied. At present the section gangs are waging constant war against the ever-encroaching belt of weeds on either side of the rails. Alfalfa also will spread, if per mitted to run to seed, but the scheme of the Union Pacific to eliminate weeds with alfalfa has dealt with this problem, and has solved It by provid ing that the farmers and ranchmen residing along the right of way be given permission to cut alfalfa be tween the fences and apply It to their own purpose. The experiment of turning a 1000- mile strip Into an alfalfa field will be watched with Interest. If successful. this system will probably be adopted by other railroads. California Prune Wafers.
