Utah May Begin Manufacture nf Dc niiturlzcil Alcohol From ItoMidiie left Over From Sugar Mills Pro cess Is Simple and Demand for New Product Promises to He Very Great. Within the next six months distil leries are to be Installed at the sugar factories In Utah and Idaho for the manufacture of denaturlzed alcohol. says the Salt Lake Herald. General Manager Thomas R. Cutler, of the Utah Sugar company, and the Idaho Sugar company, said last night that Investigations were being carried on along the line to obtain the alco hol from molasses, the uncrystallzed syrup produced In the manufacture of beet sugar. From this product, which contains a large percentage of sugar, quantities of alcohol can be produced at low cost. The removal of the gov ernment tax on denaturlzed alcohol has opened up large possibilities In the manufacture of alcohol for the arts and as a substitute for gasoline for motive power. Mr. Cutler was unable to say Just what process would be used In the manufacture of the alcohol or how much money would be spent In estab lishing distilleries. It Is possible, however, that the company will be In corporated, consisting of the same of ficers as of the sugar companies, for the manufacture of the denaturlzed product. Many Uses Possible. "The possibilities along this line are great." said Mr. Cutler last night. Abe Conn, representing the Campbell-Stanford-Henley company of Portland, dealers In grain bags, and the Ripley Grain company of San Francisco, says in relation to the high price and the "shortage" of grain bags, "The shortage Is due to the small crop of Jute and to the great number of sacks destroyed In the San Francisco fire. I do not believe there Is anything In the story of the forma tion of a combine to put up the price.' J. Miller, a Yakima drunk, was sen tenced to the payment of $75 (Includ ing costs.) for disorderly conduct, and was put to work on the streets. To this he did not object until he was put In a gang with 12 Indians. This was more than his highly developed and specialized pride could stand and he balked. Not able to coax the mar shal to put him In a "gang" by him self, he managed to escape, which he did not attempt to do until his race pride was wounded. The new law provides that domes tic alcohol of such degree of proof and under such regulations as the commissioner of Internal revenue, with the approval of the secretary of the treasury may prescribe, may be withdrawn without the payment nf Internal revenue tax, for use In the arts and Industries, and for fuel, light and power. It also provides that the same shall be denatured ro as to destroy Its character as a beverage and render It unfit for liquid medici nal purposes. No process is provided In the act. The German system of denaturlzlng alcohol is to add to every 2614 gallons of spirits, 2'j liters of the "standard dennturizPi," made of four parts of wood alcohol, one part of pyrldin, with the addition of 50 grams to each liter or oil of Iavendar; one and one fourth liters of the above "standard" and two iiters of benzol with every 100 liters of alcohol. There are screr al other processes of denaturlzlng suf ficient to prevent ulcohol from being drank, but would not classify it as wholly denaturized spirits. Alcohol may also be obtained 'from various vegetable Juices by allowing them to ferment. It Is possible that potatoes will be used to produce alco hol In tests that are to be made by persons Interested In the manufacture of the denaturlzed product. The po tatoes will be crushed, sterilized und malted. The product is allowed to ferment and, after standing some time, is distilled to separate, the alco hoi from the water.
