There Is as much dispute In the
northwest as to where the Fourth of
July was first celebrated west ot the
Rocky mountains, as there Is over
the "first white child" born west of
the mountains, but It seems that the
state historical society of Washington
hn finally decided where the first
celebration was held, and honored It
with a monument.
The following Bpeclal from Spokane
gives an account of the marking of
the spot near American Lak where
the very first celebration was held In
tho northwest, on July 4. 1841. The
special says:
Governor A. E. Mead was the prin
cipal speaker at a celebration at
American Lake today commemorating
the first Fourth of July celebration
ever held west of the Missouri river,
July 4, 1841. The celebration was
held under the auspices of the State
Historical society at a point between
American Lake and Lake Squttla
chew. This is believed to be the exact
snot on which the -first celebration
was held, 6 years ago.
At that time Captain Charles
Wilkes, U. S. A., was on an exploration
and landed at Fort Nlsqually, near
which the Hudson's Bay company
maintained a post. He went inlund
a short distance to the flat table land
where the Fourth of July celebration
was held. American Lake was at that
time given the name which It has ever
since retained.
The celebration today Brought to
gether notable orators and pioneers
from nil points on Puget Sound. In
Ills address Governor Mead spoke al
most entirely on the historical phase
of the early exploration of this terri
tory. ,
A plain shaft of granite marking
the spot where the first Independence
day celebration was held was unveiled
with elaborate ceremonies.
