of Machlas bay. on the coast of Maine
and went down, her crew of five men
being drowned.
A sailor of the Sylph, Roosevelt'?
private yacht, while ashore at Oyster
Bay. was stabbed by an Italian. He
was ba lly, though not necessarily fa
tally Injured. The row originated by
the sailor throwing; a bunch of lighted
firecrackers among a group of Ital
ians. All hands were drinking.
The equipment bureau of the Unit
ed states navy and army, states that
the additional star representing Okla
homa the 46th state will not be
added to government flags and en
signs until July 1. 1907. After that
date it will appear on all government
flag emblems.

York. A dozen persons were wound
el. Not one of the perpetrators of
the outrage, all of whom were on a
pier at Highland Beach, could be ap
prehended. The Canadian government has en
tered upon a systematic plan of re
tiring all American silver money. The
method Is for all the banks to take
in In the ordinary course of business
all the genuine stuff they can get hold
of. It Is then melted down by the
Canadian government, which redeems
it with Dominion money.
. One of the most widely traveled
men in the world was Prof. Henry A.
Ward, who was killed in an automo
bile accident at Buffalo, a few days
ago. His travels were mainly for the
purpose of collecting meteorites, and
he owned the largest collection in the
world, excepting those the property
nf the German and Austrian govern
ments. At least six and possibly double that
number of lives were lost as the re
sult of the collapse of a boat landing
platform at Manawa Lake, near Oma
ha, the night of July 4. The dead
whose bodies have been recovered are:

land. Omaha; Mary West, Council
Bluffs; Mary Looney. South Omaha;

Only one fire occurred in Portland
on July 4, which the fire department
avers is the best record for that city

an old shack at the corner of Fourth
and Ash being the victim. It Ignited
from a bunch of firecrackers thrown
upon the roof.
The grandstand at Natatorlum
park, a Spokane pleasure resort,
burned on July 4, in an incredibly
short space of time. The crowd had
just filed out. Several ball players!
in the dressing rooms underneath the j
stand were scorched. Loss, about

at $luu stored beneath the slain!. j
At Portland on July 4 Gordon Al-
leu. aged 19. was drowned in the Vil-
lamcltc. while bathing. Kriien'

The East Oregonlan has Just re
ceived a letter from W. H. Meads,
superintendent of the jute mill at the
Walla Walla penitentiary.
Mr. Meads commends rile movement
of the farmers of Umatilla county to
secure a state Jute mill, and gives
much valuable Information on the
subject. His Interesting letter is as
follows:
Walla Walla. Wash., July 6. -(To
the East Oregonlan.) With regard

organizing for the purpose of peti
tioning the legislature to authorize . an
appropriation to be expended on the
Installation of a proposed Jute plant
to be located at the star penitentiary
at Sulem, I would like to be permit
ted to express the opinion that the
object Is worthy the support of every
progressive man within tins borders of
your great state.
Speaking from the standpoint of
one of expmlence and 111 a position to
know. I would say that it Is my can
d'd belief that such a venture can
well be promoted with every assur
ance of success financially and bene
ficially, and of a better supply of
such commodities ns are produced by
a prison plant of the character men
tioned, and at the same time provid
ing a certain means of saving in cost
to the person most concerned the
farmer.

Tu-loom mill and has an average ca

an average 10 hours each day. and the

lilies of burlap, hop cloth, fleece
twine, hop warp, etc.. which is ex

That there Is a good margin for
profit goes without saying, when the
fact Is known that the season's output
of grain bags are marketed at the rate

Increased Output of Copper.
The value of the copper product In
the United States in 1905 was $137,
49S.727. as compared with $105,629.
845 In 1904. The product of 1905 was
much the largest ever recorded In the
United States. Exports of copper to
Germany. Holland and other countries
continue to 'increase. During the
month of May 11.072.320 pounds were
shipped to Germany, as compared
with 6.3S1.310 pounds In April. Ex
ports to Holland were 14.197.120
pound. In May. an increase of over
1.000.000 pounds as compared with
the preceding month. France took
.S4S 4S0 pounds and the United
Kingdom 5.12" 1 20 pounds, being
considerable increase.

the Portland General Electric com

ing this summer and next fall, at an
approximate expense of $190,000.
