Burke. TURNS EVER TO OREGON. A most beautiful and elevating rite has Just been performed in Portland. Nat Brown, a miner of Butte, died re- remiv ami before passing away, re quested that his remains be cremated and his dust scattered upon the Wll inmettn river, which he nad loved since boyhood. After his death the oody was shipped to the Portland crematory and cremated, the ashes placed in an urn and a friend to whom the execu tion of the dead man's wishes had been assigned, took a boat and row ing slowly down the Willamette, scattered the handful of ashes of the old miner upon the stream he had loved in life. This is a most beautiful scene throughout. It opens up the senti mental side of cremation and removes much of the horror of this mode of disposal of the remains of the dead. To think that your ashes might be scattered in some loved spot, or might he denoslted at the roots of flowers or trees or placed where they might he a perpetual reminder of your life, to friends lingering behind, gives a new beauty to the subject of crema tion. The urn will tmally succeed the tomb, throughout the world, U Is believed, for both sanitary and senti mental reasons. be built here were It possible to reach the trust prices, would be substantial houses, for homes, and not for rent. The carpenters and contractors all over the country are Idle because of the robberj' of the trust. Towns and cities are held back In legitimate de velopment and the country la ma terially injured by this criminal com bination. There Is no reason for lumber be ing so high-priced In this country of forests. In Kansas and Nebraska, 1600 miles from the Oregon forests, Oregon lumber Is cheaper than It Is In Pendleton today. It Is a cold blooded combination without excuse or Justification and should be so se verely rebuked by the people that It would never dare to extort an unearn ed dollar from the public again. Sojwell Is Oregon advertised by her products throughout the world, that whenever anything good or unique or attractive is wanted, the seeker turns to this state as a sure resource. Japan now has horse buyers in the state searching for suitable cavalry horses. One shipment of Oregon horses in Japan madj a demand for more. Colorado, Montana, Nebraska and Michigan sheep buyers are scouring 'Oregon for fine sheep. Shipments of Oregon sheep have so pleased buyers nd growers that when further addi tions to their flocks were wanted, they Instinctively turned to Oregon. Under the terms of surrender they were entitled to their horses. For several ream claims of this sort have been- paid by tne quarter master general under a special pro- Islon of law. to meet which, three ap portionments have been made on each occasion, with the expectation, that there would be no further demand for funds for that purpose. The auditing officials say that there will probably be no end to the claims of this sort and they do not favor the extension of the period of allowance or additional appropriation to meet hese belated bills. It was expected there would be few nstances where claims would be made of the loss by confiscation of animals belonging to confederate cavalrymen under the circumstances described. but as one war department officer, familiar with the situation, describes It. there appears to have been a arger amount of cavalry In the dying lays of the confederacy than lias been dreamed! of In the surviving records, These Irorse claims have probably reached' their limit WT1EN I AM DEAD.
