The chief error In the colleges
lies in the fact that they have
separated the world of culture
horn the world of work. They
have fostered the fallacy that
one set of men should do the la
bor, and another set should
have the education that one
should be ornamental and the
other useful. Then, to bolster
their position, they have manu
factured specious arguments try
ing to show that the profession
als who supply truth and art to
the poor people who have neith
er, are better than the folks who
toll to feed and clothe the folks
who make the arguments. The
fact Is that the opportunities for
education should be within the
reach of every' Individual, not
for the lucky few. Nature Is

TRIDITE TO WOMEN'.
The Portland Telegram pays thU
beautiful tribute to Oregon's women:
The women of Oregon are game.
They were game In the Initial skir
mish, game In the heat of battle and
gamer still In the confusion of de
feat. Though the day has been lost
for the equal suffrage cause In the
state In the present election, the lead
ers of the movement are going right
ahead, cheerfully, bravely and unre
mittingly planning for the joining. of
the Issue again at the first opportu
nlty, which wll come two years
hence.
Pluck, hope, courage and enthusi
asm are as apparent in their actions
In the face of the lost cause ts they
were at any time during the bold and
haTj-foupht campaign, when the fate
of the Issue was still In the balance,
and, while disappointed to a degree,
they are not depressed.
The returns at present are complete
enough to write the seal of doom for
woman suffrage, and the women are
accepting the Inevitable as stoically
as the most experienced veterans of
the political arena.
They find comfor' tn the fact that
. the majority against them will he
frreatly reduced over what It was six
years ago, and by the same token they
Intend to keep hammering at the op
position until It has dwindled away
and the t'de has turned In their fa
vor. Nor will they stop there. With Ore
t gon In the "right" column, and lined
tip with Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado,
Utah and Kansas, the National organ
izers will move on to new fields.
If a combination of railroads, pack
ing houses, farm Implement manufac
tories, steel plants and coal mines Is
profitable to those operating such In
dustries, why should not a union of
the wheatgrowers of the inland em
pire for mutual protection and ad
vancement be beneficial?
The East Oregonlan nas long fa
vored a wheatgrowers" association In
Umatilla county or the Inland empire.
It believes that the growers should be
closer together. It believes In co-operation.
It believes that while buy
ers may not always be combined, that
I there are always more points In favo
favor of the grower.
For this reason a vheatgrowers' as
sociation In which all the crop of the
country might be pooled and offered
for rale In competitive bids to the
highest bidder. Is desirable. This will
buyer an equal opportunity. It will
simplify wheat sales as the wool sales
days have 'Implified the sale of wool
In the wool producing states.
Every manufacturing and market
ing 'nterest Is combined against the
farmer. This may be a broad asser
tion, but on Investigation It will be
found to be true. The trusts control
the production of farm Implements.
they control the big warehouses and
So the farmer stands
the combined
Interests with which he must deal.
In order to get what Is due him for
producing the crops, he must protect
himself. And In no way can he pro
tect himself so well as through the
combination or co-operative associa
tion. The East Oregonlan hopes that the
farmers will attend the meeting to be
held In this city on next Saturday
afternoon and that a permanent or
ganization of 'Inland empire farmers
will be effected. Such an organlza
tlon has benefited the woolgrower. It
wll' benefit the wheatgrower in the
same degree.

not one woman entrusted with a re

TO SAVE IRELAND.
The progress of agrarian legislation
In a settled country like Great Brit
ain mut he distinctly encouraging to
a body like the Russian douma striv
ing to put the agriculture of the em
Tilre uDon a basis of Justice to the
country and the peasantry.
Under the pressure from the Irish
nationalist group the liberal govern
ment has drafted and brought Into
the house of commons a bill which
should go a long way toward settling
the economic Irish question. The
measure which haB been fathered by
James TSryce, the Irish secretary, and
to which the government stands com
mltted, authorizes a government loan
of 122,500,000 for the erection of la.
borers' cottages. This sum Is to bi
given on the same terms as the ad

IRRIGATION WORKERS.
The men who are pushing Irrigation
Into the arid regions of the great west
are benefiting more of the populace
of this country directly and Indirectly
than any other body of men who are
Interested In public work.
More irrigation means marry more
productive homes for Individual Term
ers, and homes that, once occupied
will not be deserted, as crops and
prosperity are Insured to the farmer
who has the water supply under his
controf.
Irrigation means more traffic for
the railroad?, more and better food
for the people who live where food Is
scarce and high. It develops tnose
regions of the country that most need
developing; It relieves congestion In
the older agricultural regions by of
fording new and attractive fields for
the progressive young men. It Is
work that should be more appreciated
and encouraged. New York Sun.
